He's fine is talking and breathing etc but he's coughing ALOT and straining to get it out. It's a little piece of foodand this has been going on for an hour or two.

How do I get the food out or get it to go down. He is happy but it is bothering him too.

I would take him to A&E, surely a choking hazard?

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2010 20:31

six firm slaps between shoulder blades

hold him facing down seated on your knee

if this doesn't work take him to A and E

whomovedmychocolate · 27/02/2010 20:31

It probably has gone down, he's probably scratched his throat. Chewing soft bread can help, and obviously, lots of liquids. A mild painkiller will help the discomfort but it's unlikely there is anything stuck.

cookielove · 27/02/2010 20:32

I assume you have tried getting him to drink, it may not actually be food stuck, more that food has scratched his throat on the way down, causing discomfort and making him cough!

If there is food stuck in his throat i think you need to go to a&e

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2010 20:32

DO NOT put your fingers down his throat whatever you do.

whomovedmychocolate · 27/02/2010 20:32

If you do think anything is still there - don't give him anything else to eat obviously!

LoveBeingAMummy · 27/02/2010 20:34

Call NHS Direct if you are really worried

MrsMargate · 27/02/2010 20:36

Oh bloody hell.

Your child has something stuck in his throat and you're posting on the internet? Can you not make a decision yourself? ffs it's not 'what shall I have for lunch' - what if it slips back down the way?

It might well be nothing but how the fark do we know?

GO TO A&E.

While I'm here - is anyone bleeding to death and wondering what to do? Or perhaps someone's head has fallen off? Hmmmm....what to do what to do.....

bubbleymummy · 27/02/2010 20:37

I would think if it has gone past his airway (because he's able to breathe) then it would make more sense to push it down into his stomach with the soft bread or maybe some banana ( something soft so it doesn't hurt his throat) rather than trying to bring it back up where it potntially lodge in his airway. Phone out of hours maybe?

EasyEggs · 27/02/2010 20:37

I'd second giving him some bread to eat, ds did this last summer, we went to A&E, they said probably a scratch as they couldn't see anything but to try bread when we got in, bread in, coughing stopped

Hope he is better soon x

EasyEggs · 27/02/2010 20:38

MrsMargate that was a bit uncalled for.

It obviously isn't life threatening or OP wouldn't be here would she.

frasersmummy · 27/02/2010 20:41

I'm with mrsmargate

dont take chances by asking on the internet

get to a&e and have it checked out. What if something is stuck and it moves slightly and he cant breathe ...

get to a hospital for gods sake

mixedraceparents · 27/02/2010 20:42

Thanks for the advice I do have four kid and done more than my fair share of rushing to a &e. As I said he is fine and he eats soft food, he is laughing and talking etc it just seems to be annoying him. I'm trying braed as we speak and will work down the list.

mixedraceparents · 27/02/2010 20:43

I should have said the coughing is on average every 5-10 mins in between he is fine

whomovedmychocolate · 27/02/2010 20:48

Sounds very much like a scratch then. DH reckons simple linctus helps (as in cough mixture) as it coats the throat and can make things slippery. But then, he married me, clearly he has problems with making sensible decisions

NathanBarley · 27/02/2010 20:57

this happened to my dd, went to emergency docs and it turned out to be a sticker stuck at the back of her mouth

mixedraceparents · 28/02/2010 08:19

He's slept all night without much coughing and is fine this morning, which makes me think he did scratch himself.

A very big thanks for all the advice, it does really help mid worry to havve some sensibl advice :0)

It was over 10 years ago, doubt if she is going to feel particularly burned by your objection...
