Ds is 12 he had a temp Sunday night but was ok mon and tuesday.
Then tuesday teatime complaining of a sore testicle, was red and swollen rang nhs direct who sent us to a and e.

They didn't think it was twisted but maybe infection? So presciibed antibiotics.
While there ds had to give a urine sample which was plus 4 ? for protein. So Doctor did a blood test and said he would be in touch if any problem.
He told us to go to gp Friday morning to see if any protein still in urine.
Anyway went to GP this morning and urine plus 3 for protein and message from hospital asking for bloods to be repeated.
GP not convinced its an infection, then she rang tthis afternoon and asked to take ds for a scan on his testicle which showed varicosis (sp?) like a varicus vain I think?

The gp asked us to go back Monday to check urine again.

So what do you think? She said if anything changed at all over the weekend to go straight to a and E.

LargeGlass - it could be many things. For example it could be an infection in his epididymis or in the testicle itself. The tube that stores sperm. I know he is only 12 but he will be close to puberty if not there already. I have had it and it is very very painful.

He may have a twisted/ruptured testicle and red and swollen does not sound good at all. However, to be honest I would have expected him to be in agonising pain by now if that were the case. Does he play a lot of sport had a traumatic fall of his bike, been kicked in the groin?

What is most important though is to keep a very close eye on him and any change you get straight to A&E. These things can cascade very quickly.

thankyou, yes they said something about infection in his epididymis on tuesday, but apart from being a bit uncomfortable when he walks he's not in pain.

He doesn't remember having any injury, the swellings gone down now and skin just really cracked and dry.

He's going through puberty at the moment and looks older than 12. Just can't work out why there is protein in his urine.

It is the bacteria/virus that is causing the infection that is showing up as 'protein'. It may also be traces of blood in the urine that again will be caused by the infection.

It is most likely that your son has had a standard urine dip test. I have one about every two months as I have a very long standing urininary tract problem. Do not be worried by the word protein itself. It is not important. It is just the indicator of an infection. There are diseases that cause protein to be secreted in the urine but they are metablic disorders and or the kidneys and really unlikely to be anything to do with what your son most probably has.

Infection in the epididymis can come and go in my experience and is quite tricky to kill and may have to have antibiotics for a while. I have had it probably a dozen times. The pain stretches down my leg and up into my back although the infection is actually in the tube that sits at the back of the testicle that leads to the prostate.

I hope it goes well and your DS is feelng a bit more comfortable.

Your GP also went beyond the call of duty too. Clearly he/she is very aware that these things needs very careful monitoring and is very on top of the situation.

How did it go?? X

LargeGlassofRed · 01/03/2010 20:04

thanks for the messages, better thanks,
gp tested urine and has only a small amount of protein in it now, she hadn't had the blood test results from friday but was reasurred by the urine test.
She increased his antibiotics today and is chasing the urology appointment should get an appointment this week.

Good stuff. Make sure he takes all the antibiotics even if he feels better. In my experience it has a tendency to lurk and then come back.
