Croup

DS (15 months) has had a cold for a few weeks now, and has a bad cough that isn't clearing. Today my DP took him to the doctor, who said she thought it might be croup. She gave DP 8 soluble tablets and said DS was to get 2 doses, but my DP isn't exactly clear on how many tablets DS has to have ...(*!!!@!) at first he said he was to get 2 doses of 2 tablets, but when I questioned why then we had been given a total of 8 tablets, he then said actually he was to get 2 doses of 4 tablets! Can anyone shed any light on what would be a normal dose? Also, not entirely sure what the tablets are - DP thinks the doc said some sort of steroid?

No, just 8 tablets that must have been taken out of a packet. They are in the the normal tinfoil type packaging that you pop them out of, but there is no name on the packaging. They are small and pink, that's all I know about them! Have done quick web search and apparently steroids may well be prescribed for croup, but still not sure what quantity he should get. And also don't like the thought of him getting steroids ... he is not having difficulty breathing, he just has a hellish cough!

hmmm that sounds rather dodgy to me tbh!

were they not prescribed? if they were on prescription they ought to be in a box, with a leaflet and also a sticker on with the GP's instructions on dosage.

i would NOT give any until you have spoken to the GP about it

If it is croup we found steam the best to ease the barky cough. Steamy shower cubicle was what we did and just held her close away from the water so she didn't get a soaking. It was a pain in the night but seemed to ease it.
