Anyone ese had THIS MANY bugs this winter?

We have had what seems like the most awful winter full of bugs. My DS (almost 5) is today of school with his 3rd vomiting bug in six weeks. My DD (2.5) is Ok, but is coming down with temperatures every two-three weeks. My DP has had at least one sickness bug and so have I. I'm the mist worried about my son. He is the only person I know who has been sick this much. Am I being stupid to worry about this?

We've had a horrible winter of bugs too. Since Halloween, our house has not been without a cough and we have shares in Calpol & Nurofen for Kids.

The kids eat plenty of fruit & veg, get lots of fresh air (we live on a farm, on an island - no choice!) and exercise.

Downside of where we are is that we have no immunity to whatever is going around, so we get every strain that visitors bring from different parts of the country.

I guess as long as the kids are not losing weight and are well in between bouts, then there isn't too much to worry about.

As always, speak to your GP if you are really worried.

mankyscotslass · 25/02/2010 10:30

We have had a bad winter too.

I think we all had Swine Flu in December, then since January the kids have had one viral/temp bug after another. Two of the 3 have just finished antibiotics for ear/throat infections, and my middle dc is off school at the moment with a nasty post viral cough that is not letting her sleep so she is tearfull in the day and really not up for school at all.

I have just had a heavy cold and have now lost my voice.

I just want us all to be well!

Maybe by the time they get to secondary they will have such strong immune systems that they will never be off.

piratecat · 25/02/2010 10:34

oh god, us too. Dd has the ability to catch every bug going round, and no sooner starts to getover something, and I send her back to school, then she comes down with something else.

She IS a poor eater when is comes to the veg/fruit side, but on reading YuocantteuchThis's post about her healthy kids, also getting ill, i don't feel so bad for not forcing her to eat better!!

dd is 7 and has had cough after cough, earaches, sore thoats, runy noses since october. oh and fever and headaches. Trips to the gp, wel i havent bothered, as antibiotics are rarely given out anyhow.

GypsyMoth · 25/02/2010 10:39

am i odd??

i have 5 dc....4 in 3 different schools....so would expect illnesses!!

but nothing....nothing more than a few sniffles which they just carried on with

maybe its because we have the heating on for an hour in the morning then hour and half only at night??

nickytwotimes · 25/02/2010 10:41

We'ev been quite bad too, but it is ds's first year at nursery so I guess to be expected.

mankyscotslass · 25/02/2010 10:41

I am now on first name terms with the school admin staff, and they recognise my voice on the phone without me having to say my name.

"Which one now Mrs Manky?"

I actually popped into the office this morning and the deputy head was laughing at my despair. I bet she won't be laughing when they send out letters about attendance at school.

My GP told me to tell school to take a running jump!

His opijnion is that if you have 30 kids in a class and a bad winter then they are going to get sick. A lot. I don't think school see it like that though, thanks to the LEA.

mawbroon · 25/02/2010 10:42

Yep, we had an awful time, starting in mid october.

For 9 weeks, one, some or all of us in the house were ill.

Between us, we had:

  • croup
  • x2 different ear infections
  • x3 different stomach bugs (one of ds's lasted 9 days)
  • flu (was negative for H1N1) where dh had fever for 6 days - ds and I got off a bit more lightly but were still ill for the best part of a fortnight.

During this time, ds also fell off his bike and had to get his head glued. But that doesn't really count.

Just as we were getting back to "normal", I managed to break my ankle and had to have surgery. Was 32 weeks pg at the time (due in 2 days time!!) But that doesn't count as illness either.

So, I can sympathise with you. It's awful when everyone is ill.

mankyscotslass · 25/02/2010 10:43

Three, it could well be, I've been told to switch the heating off in the day too, but I can't as my mother is staying with me and she is il. She suffers from Lupus and Raynauds and gets very ill with the cold.

ilovehugs · 25/02/2010 11:11

Oh dear! I hate to think of you and your children being poorly, but I have to say I feel a bit reassured that we're not the only ones this badly hit.
Just rang the GP and she said that they wouldn't be concerned unless he continued to get worse and worse and didn't seem like himself for a long time. Funnily enough we have had no Chest infection, ear infections, and hadly any colds - just lots of sickness and runny tummys. We have just moved into a very new house which is allot more air-tight than our old one. Wall to wall new carpet insead of wood floors so it's much warmer in here and less fresh air. Maybe that's made him more prone to picking up stuff? Roll on spring!!!!

DD's high temperature bugs have been without runny noses too. Maybe I should turn my heating down, I have been blasting it allot and the Doc said that going from hot to cold is something that makes these bugs worse ThreeBlondeBoys.

we have had our worst few months for illness recently - nothing major (no swine flu or winter vomiting bug) - just an endless stream of colds, and stomach bugs, and general weird virus things. I seem to have had them worse than the rest of the family - but we have all had more than normal this winter.

GypsyMoth · 25/02/2010 11:19

maybe theres something in it then? my dc say school is chilly too, which i'm thinking isnt a bad thing.

the youngest dc is almost 2....he's only ever had one cold and chicken pox!!

ilovehugs · 25/02/2010 11:29

Right....I'm ready to try anything...off to the thermostat now!

Another here!
Last Semptember -sih we all got swine flu (possibly, diagnosed over the phone!). we were all EXTREMELY ill for a few weeks. Apart from my 3 year old boy who didn't get it!
Since then it's been one bug after another. I was guessing that we were all a bit 'low' after swine flu so couldn't fight things off but it's very tiring now.
I've sent my 8 year old in today but she's been off for two days with a tummy bug.
My other dd (just turned 5) also gets hit the worst. At one point after Christmas i took her to G.P and she was so weak after another vomitting bug that i was carrying her and she could hardly lift her head up. The receptionist looked very alarmed. I mentioned to the G.P that things always hit her harder than anyone else and i was getting very worried about her. The G.P said what i thought really, she was probably left very weak after the swine flu and susceptible to any bug going round. She re assured me that if indeed there was anything seriously wrong with her immune system, she wouldn't fight the bugs off at all, never mind take twice as long as everyone else.
I don't think you're being stupid, i've been worrying every time they're sick!

countrylover · 25/02/2010 12:01

DS2 has had five ear infections, one chest infection, a couple of non descript fever with no other symtoms bugs and one stomach bug since october. He's ten months old!

DS1 was exactly the same for the first two winters and then by the time he got to his third winter we only had one ear infection. He's now four and he's had one chest infection and one stomach bug this winter so I'm clinging on to the fact that their immune systems do appear to cope better when they're a bit older.

Marne · 25/02/2010 12:56

We have had loads of bugs this winter, both dd's have had so much time off school and nursery. They have had flu virus's, stomach bugs, scarlet fever, colds, impatigo and throat infections. Dd2 had scarlet fever, was just recovering and then came down with tummy bug (which dd1 and i also had). Hopefully spring is almost here and the bugs will disapear. It has been the worst winter for us .

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 25/02/2010 13:13

We have had loads of illnesses this year. Both dses have had time off with flu (not swine flu) and stomach bugs. DS1 has had a permanent cold.

Last year they had no time off school at all, this year their attendance is awful.

I've had my fair share of problems too; I had a major op in November which took me a couple of months to start feeling myself again, then I fell off my bike and injured myself really badly, then when I was getting up on my feet again after that I got a stomach bug which lasted ages, then I had a cold

Here's hoping spring brings a respite for everyone.

Bellared · 25/02/2010 20:09

So it's not just ds then! He started nursery for the first time in Jan and has had tonsilitis, ear infection, viral cough, upper resp. tract infection one in the lower chest, d&v which DH and I got. DH has an ileostomy so that was not pretty having d&v! DS has got a bit of a cough back but I've started him on multivits, probiotics and echinacea to help boost him after all the bugs.

I hope Springs brings us all respite too!!!
