My poor little man has been diagnosed with conjunctivitus however the infection has spread to his throat, ears and bowel resulting in him having a temperature of over 40 and horrible diarhoea. He waas prescribed antibiotics and baby ibruprofen last night which I have been giving religiously every 8 hours. He has been sleeping constantly in between, then having two 200ml beakers of cooled boiled water whenever I give him the medication. Ive only been waking him to give him the water and drugs, should I try and wake him inbetween to give more water or try breastfeeding? Or should I just leave him to sleep it off? I'm torn as all I want to do is hold him and give him lots of cuddles! Please help!

How scary. What did the doctor say about breast milk? I thought that was always the best option but you need to check because of his tummy upset.

I think I'd be tempted to keep him close, maybe move the cot, so I could watch for any change but let him sleep it off.

If hes managing to keep down 400mls water every 8hrs (having 1200mls in 24 hours) then he is unlikely to be that dehydrated although his insensible losses from a temp and his diarrhoea will mean he needs considerably more fluid than normal.Make sure he is weeing and if he becomes floppy and overly lethargic or slow to respond (not crying is always more worrying than crying) he needs to be seen.
If he wants breastfeed for comfort thats fine but I wouldnt deliberately keep waking him up unless he is not weeing and appears "dry"-ie dry lips/papery skin/sunken eyes. You can also give calpol as well as brufen and the 2 can work well together for fever and pain.
Poor litttle thing-really hope he feels better soon.

Thanks both! kathyjelly the docs, HV and nurses at NHS direct all said it was the best option and if he becomes dehydrated to try the rehydration sachets thingies.
I feel like such a rubbish mum at the minute since he boooed his head off when I gave him the last medication but his temperature was 41.2! I've been scrubbing the house with milton all morning (not that I live in a dirty house anyway!) I'm so worried! :-(

I know its awful when they are inconsolable but I promise you a non responsive child would be far more worrying-I would try the calpol and brufen alternated as it can be effective.
Sounds like adenovirus to me-causes runny nose, conjunctivitis and diarrhoea-very very common in the community and apparently doing the rounds at the mo-I promise you its nothing to do with your personal hygiene-more likely to be the person who sneezed on you in Sainsburys...
Really hope he improves soon...

Thank you!! Temp is down to 39.2 and he's happily snoozing rather than panting. The cleaning has made me feel abit better even if our house now smells like an operating theatre! He's not had anything to properly eat since lunchtime yesterday (only had 1/4 of abit of fish), should I wait til I even contemplate food? How long can one go without food??! Sorry to be a pain! I am soooo obviously a first time mum!!

Dont be silly-you are not being a pain-fluid is much more important thasn food tbh-he will soon catch up nutritionally when he feels better-if diarrhoea is still rampant go easy on food and stick to lots of fluid-he will soon tell you when hes hungry and try a dry cracker/toast to start with and go easy on dairy/sugary stuff...I promise you in a few days you will be wondering where he puts all his food (children usually eat for England once recovered to make up)...

i think you should get him re-assessed to be honest... 41.2 is a very high temp, i would recommend taking him to A&E.
