DS1 is 5 and fell over this morning and hit his chin knocking his top and bottom teeth together. Cried for ages and wouldn't eat for hours

Can't see anything wrong but they are still painful to the touch- no idea if they are wobbly as he cries as soon as anyone touches them. Have given him calpol but is there anything else I could/should be doing?

He might have fractured a tooth root or two also - a trip to the dentist is in order, I think.

should i call the emergency dentist?

I don't want to stop him getting the treatment he needs but I also have a toddler, no family nearby to help out and DH has just come out of hospital following an operation so i can't leave the toddler with him

Hi.
Used to work as an A&E dentist.
If u can, check the upper and lower lip for cuts, cuts to the gum, bleeding around the teeth etc. Are the teeth mobile?
Give nurofen and calpol regularly for pain relief. Keep child on soft diet ie. yoghurts, ice-cream, mash potato, soups etc. Cold foods in the mouth help to alleviate pain.
If worried about fractures to teeth (which will be obvious) then go to A&E.
Usually these type of accidents result in a concussed tooth. See dentist later for reassurance. Tooth may later darken due to trauma.
