15mo vomiting lots - what can I give him??

DS2 has been vomiting since Friday morning - am going to take him to docs tomorrow if he doesn't improve by then.

What can I give him in the meantime? He is keeping some food/water down but it is hit and miss. He had a yoghurt for lunch and managed an hour afterwards without being sick whereas his weetabix came straight back up at breakfast time.

He seems ok - he is moping around and sleeping a lot but doesn't have a temperature or diaorrhea.

So what food is best - do I carry on feeding him as normal??

They used to recommend the BRAT diet which is banana, rice, apple, toast but they say now to carry on feeding as normal.

Dairy's not good on a poorly tummy. Gastro bugs can cause a temporary intolerance so avoid milk and yoghurt and the like.

Plenty of water, rehydration sachets if you're worried.

Whatever he fancies I think. As long as he doesn't fancy a doughnut.

I can't help but I'm interested in this as well - 16 month old has been vomiting since yesterday morning, keeps almost nothing down. Isn't up to big meals so he's just been having occasional bits of rusk or toast, which generally comes up again a while later.

He has a temp as well though :-(

HerMomminess · 21/02/2010 14:03

I would try to get some dioralyte in tho,as SOH says they recommend normal feeding. IF lots of vomiting/diarrhoea I think it would help to get some salts&fluid in.You can add some diluting juice to the natural ones as it tastes disgudtin!

We' re just recovering from our stint.

Good luck!

Ceebee74 · 21/02/2010 14:10

Thanks for the advice - I had the BRAT diet in the back of my mind but he loves yoghurts and I just thought it was better to get something into him (he turned his nose up at dry toast )

He is asleep again now!

Can you buy dioralyte over the counter (for some reason I thought it had to be on prescription)?

CeeBee how is your lo / Does he have a temp at all now?? I'm at home with my two - 3.5 years and 13 months. DD 13 months started on Saturday morning - puked up her milk and then her weetabix and we've not had a huge amount since. Stopped puking yesterday at 5ish. DS is 3.5years puked his tea up and then puked up the rest in the night. He's been on sips of water only since he managed to puke up his breakfast this morning too.

If it helps, once I could see that DD was not even retching anymore she had a tiny bit of toast. I then waited an hour or so and gave her a bit of mashed banana and some apple puree mixed. Then waited another hour - 2 hours and gave her a rice cake. All of it has stayed down. For tea we had a small ice cream scoop size of mash/sweet potato.....I also gave her 3.5oz of milk at bedtime - she's not had milk since Sat am. She's had about 300 - 400 mls water in small doses through the day.

I've just been up though (so be warned - i thought DD was on the mend this afternoon) and she now has major diarrhoea....and a high temp....and has slept loads and loads today. Literally would be awake for maybe half an hour tops and then nod off again.

I think the key thing is to keep them hydrated. Check the nappy. I was worried with DD that her nappy was dry - I gave her a bath to perk her up a bit and then gave her her milk whilst she was in her towel and she peed all over me ! So I think she's ok....even if he doesn't want to eat - (and don't worry if he doesn't) then just try little sips of drink. I've made up a dioralyte sachet on the side and fill up a tiny bit of her beaker to give her each time.

It's all a bit trial and error but when DS had a bug like this at 9 months we just had to go with the flow. My washing machine is on permanently - DH has just left on a business trip and I have to go to work tomorrow (or not !) - Granny is arriving after breakfast thank goodness as I have two very very clingy children....

Hope your ds's bug goes soon...I remember with DS when he was little and had it that he just was extremely pathetic for about a week and wanted lots and lots of cuddles ! (and also looked very very scrawny at the end of it all.....

herbgarden · 21/02/2010 21:08

PS the diarolyte which I have here is the stuff I had on prescription 3 years ago and is still in date. They'll give you quite a big box of it. I can't honestly remember how much it is though if you buy it - might be less hassle if you don't mind the expense. You also might find the dairy stuff a bit much - my dd loves yogs too but I've been a bit cautious with them.....

Rhian82 · 21/02/2010 21:16

Yeah we've found milk isn't great, so DS is just on water. Feel quite bad as he's hardly getting any calories at all, but I guess keeping him hydrated is the important thing - he's having wet nappies so that's good. He has occasional bits and pieces, never more than half a rusk or a corner of toast, sometimes he keeps them down, sometimes he doesn't. He's just spent the day on our laps in front of the TV, drifting off lots and occasionally asking for food or drink. Always looking miserable, poor thing

Ceebee74 · 21/02/2010 21:17

herbgarden thanks for your advice.

DS2 had a 2-hour nap this afternoon, woke up and seemed a bit brighter and had 3 mini ricecakes and then about 30 minutes later, I gave him a banana. It all stayed down - plus he drank a lot of water. I gave him some plain rice and peas for tea but he barely touched it but did eat most of a tub of fruit puree....again which has stayed down. But, he has been very lethargic all afternoon - tried putting him in the bath to perk him up but he just sat there looking at me with his big sad eyes

Anyway, I put him to bed just before 7 as he was literally falling asleep anyway....will see how he is in the morning. He really doesn't do illness very well and whenever he has a cold or anything, he literally mopes around for days - the complete opposite to DS1 who I can barely remember ever moping around - even when he is poorly

DS1 is 3.7 and seems ok so far - no sign of him catching it (touch wood!)

Hope your 2 are better in the morning

Rhian that is exactly what DS2 has done all day - sat on my lap in front of the telly!

I stopped giving him his milk by Saturday morning I think as it definitely seemed to make things worse - but I am worried about the calories he is not eating and how much weight he is going to lose He normally absolutely loves his food and I don't want him to pass out from lack of food iyswim (or am I being over-dramatic there??)

flamingtoaster · 21/02/2010 21:21

Hope your DS2 feels better soon - by the way the A in the BRAT diet stands for applesauce, not apples, so you would need to stew or microwave the apple as it needs to be cooked if you are going to follow it.

Rhian82 · 22/02/2010 08:42

Well DS has woken this morning really hungry - so far he's had two weetabix, a slice of toast and half a fruit pot, and he still keeps walking to the kitchen and pointing mournfully at the cereal. He's kept it all down so far but I don't want to give him too much yet.

And now I'm dealing with the nappy consequences of no solids for two days - joy!

herbgarden · 22/02/2010 20:25

Ceebee74 I spoke with our doctor this afternoon on the phone - he's got 4 kids himself and is brilliant with kids and their illnesses....anyway, I was worried about DD as she was sick again at lunchtime and then she was really hysterical for a while this pm arching her back like she was in pain. (DS has really horrible diarrhoea now too and I've put him back in a nappy as he pooed his pyjamas this afternoon whilst he was napping on the sofa - poor thing he's really upset and a bit scared by it all).

Anyway DOc said that they really can go for quite a few days with very little inside them but keep the clear fluids coming - he said diluted squashes and juices good - also the dry toast breadsticks crisps and stuff are fine. He also said to give Calpol and Nurofen alternately as he said this will take away any stomach pain even if they don't have a fever and won't do any harm.

Your DS sounds a bit like my DD - she just keeps looking at me with those big eyes and I just want to make her better. DS has eaten a bit more today and the sickness seems to have subsided.....

Aaaah the joys of it. DH is on nurse duty tomorrow and I'm off to work !

herbgarden · 22/02/2010 20:28

Rhian - that all sounds positive. DS was asking me at 10am this morning if he could have his roast dinner (we saved some from yesterday) as he was "really really hungry". bless 'im.

Ceebee74 · 22/02/2010 20:44

Herbgarden thanks for that reassurance about them not eating

DS2 is better today - not been sick since yesterday lunchtime and eaten normally today. But he has been soooo clingy today - I haven't been able to leave the room without him dissolving in floods of tears!!

And to make matters worse, DH has caught it and been moping around the house all day demanding my attention!!

Poor DS1 has had to amuse himself today for hours as I either had DS2 attached to me or running around after DH.

It has been a long day and I am going to bed for an early night

Funnily enough I said to DH tonight that if DS1 catches it, he is going straight back into nappies as I really don't want to be mopping up sh*t from bedsheets etc!! Hope your DS gets better!!

Rhian great news about your DS

Am just waiting for me to catch it now

Spoke a bit too soon - he's still vomiting, though he's also still eating more. I've heard that before about it not mattering if they don't eat for a few days, as long as they're getting fluids. It's the same if they're just normally ill (not vomiting) and lose their appetite I think.

DS is drinking lots of water, but he's also brought it up in gushes a few times!

CeeBee - DS is always that clingy with me, hates me leaving the room, always has!

We've found the ibuprofen seems to stay down better than Calpol - I think it's cos a 'dose' is smaller, but at any rate he always seems to bring up the Calpol! His fever's gone now at any rate. Not sure where this came from - I rang his nursery to say he wouldn't be in this week, expecting to hear that lots of kids were off with it, but he's the only one.
