thanks oddgirl for the clarification - she seems much better now.
So although i can't give a 5mo 2.5ml every 3 hours (which i can see now- i saw it as spreading out a 5ml dose every 6 hours) can i give5ml every 4 hours? in general i mean, don't need to give more now.

thanks LD - yes, so does ours, from 1yo itsays to give up to 10ml every 4hours.
Will check her dose on your calculator, but no doubt her weight'll have changed by next time

The confusion comes because the manufacturers are basing the dosage on average weight for age...to cover themselves they say you can give four hourly with the proviso that you dont give more than 4 doses in a 24 hour period...there is actually a large margin for error as it is possible IN A HOSPITAL CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT to give up to 90mg/kg but NEVER at home without proper liver monitoring...I would normally say its better to alternate Calpol and Calprofen (which you can give 8 hrly) if a child is febrile to keep their temp down.
I really wouldnt worry about weighing her when you need to give as long as you stick to the guidelines on the bottle and remember that although you can give 4 hourly only give 4 doses in 24 hours so if you were giving it all day and all night that would actually be 6 hourly ifyswim...
Not sure if I have made that any clearer or just confused you more!!!

No, it has to be 4 hourly.

I rang once to ask if I could dose after 3 1/2 hours and was told no.

thanks, still a bit confused as to whether i can give half doses more often, but think the answer is no
She still seems a bit screamy when i feed & is arching her back, but n between she is fine & has had a nice long sleep today, which she didn't yesterday. Looking back, a lot of it was prob exhaustion
