Sorry this is a repeated thread but I'm desperate. Has anyone given a 3 month old with awful colic a dose of calpol and did/does it help?

I haven't used calpol for colic but we use woodwards gripe water and this stopped our DD crying almost instantly!

Wills · 20/02/2010 21:15

OK, have now given gripe water and will sit back and watch but I thought they'd removed the key ingredient (gin).

I've done it and baby has gone to sleep. As a one-off, if desperate, you could try it. But don't make it a habit.

Tried everything else- dark room, quiet voice, knees up, rub back? Is baby overtired? Tried bf in dark? Lying down? Dummy?

Had two with colic, it's hell.

CharlieBoo · 20/02/2010 21:17

I found it didn't work (calpol). Gripe water is best. Poor you n your bubs. My dd had it till 4 months and it was so hard. X

Bath might help?

Wills · 20/02/2010 21:18

Yup, done all those. You know its gonna be bad when they fall off the breast and start screaming

We found infacol helped

Wills · 20/02/2010 21:21

Think the bath might freak her further. Also have been using infacol but its got worse tonight.

We had to carry DD3 round with pressure on her tummy to stop the screaming.

Bicycling legs and gently pushing towards tummy sometimes makes them fart.

I think mainly it's a waiting game until burp/ fart.

Ledodgy · 20/02/2010 21:21

God you have my symapthy my older two were like this especially dd. We took ds1 for cranial osteopathy which sorted him out I still don't quite know how because it was all a bit strange but it really did work. I'd got to the point were i'd try anything!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/02/2010 21:21

Another gripe water fan here, though our 'colic' was due to milk intolerance, and of course gripe water soothes the tummy.

smallorange · 20/02/2010 21:22

It's awful.dd3 was inconsolable sometimes.

Are you sure it's Colic that your baby has? Could it be Lactose Intolerant or even have reflux? I was told by doc's, hosp & health nurse's that my children had colic until we realized with our 2nd baby that he was lactose intolerant. We changed his formula to LF and within 24hrs he was a changed baby, he has been sleeping 12-14hrs every night as well as 2hrs during the day. Our 1st was also Lactose Intolerant but we were unaware of it, she grew out of it after a few months of lots of crying, pain and sleepless nights. She too is a great sleeper. But to answer your question, yes I have given Calpol to a 3month old. I also gave gripe water, but didn't find it effective, it's not as good as it use to be from the Alcohol was removed. For wind, I found Infacol very good, I put the drops into the bottles (that's when I was under the influence that the children were 'colicky').

psychomum5 · 21/02/2010 00:31

I did, with DD3, she was dreadful.

turned out tho that it wasn;t colic but severe reflux and milk allergy, so keep an eye and see how it goes.

not suggesting it is anything other than simply colic (not that colic is simple, tis hidious for baby and mum/dad), but, well, YKWIM I hope.

Julezboo · 21/02/2010 00:34

DS2 had this really bad! We gave Colief AND gripe water! Was like a miracle cure

Wills · 21/02/2010 07:51

BUT..... surely if it were reflux she'd be throwing up loads and she def doesn't. Not loads.

You can get silent reflux where they don't vomit a lot.

We used a sling, because the "colic" was made worse by overtiredness. He couldn't sleep properly because of the pain so became exhausted. The motion of the sling and the closeness helped soothe him.

thrifty · 21/02/2010 08:09

we tried calpol once, but it didn't really help, neither did infacol or gripe water. turned out ds was also lactose intolerant, we used colief, which worked then switched to Lactose Free formula. ds was a different child after the colief. honestly wished i'd discovered the colief sooner, so i could have carried on BF. we assumed ds was hungry so switched to formula.

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2010 09:36

Second the silent reflux comment (which often goes hand in hand with milk intolerance).

Do you eat a lot of dairy Wills?
