First time it happened I dashed off to A&E as I thought it might be meningitis .

The doctor there said that it looks like it is burst blood vessels where he has coughed so much. She did say however that it is the exact same rash that is present with meningitis (ie doesn't fade).

I was just wondering if anyone else has experience of this? It's happened again and his poor little face is all spotty on one side .

I have them all over my body. They come and go- I always have more when I'm ill and gradually go again. My children used to get them around the eyes after being sick (eg D&V bugs that went on for a couple of days). They do go away again eventually. I've never experienced it being only on one side of their face though- that sounds different.

He has them round his eyes too - normally on both sides, but this time just on one side. It is the side of his face he had been sleeping on and it was all red already so perhaps that was a factor.

Never come across it before - was quite worrying at first.

I rang NHS about this once!

Ds has pinprick rash all over his face and it didnt 'pass' the glass test so I panicked.

I get this burst blood vessels around my eyes after throwing up. It only takes one episode of proper sickness for it to happen I must have weak blood vessels! If ever I mention to anyone they always look blank; never met anyone else who gets it.

It fades after a day or two.

Come to think of it I am also slightly prone to varicose veins. I wonder if there is a connection in the sense of having not-especially-strong veins in general? Probably that's rubbish but it's just occurred to me.

It's weird isn't it.

Does it hurt at all Dorothea?

I feel so sorry for DS that he has coughed so hard that he has burst his blood vessels!

I wish there was a magic cure for coughs as it is a "virus" and nothing the doctors can do .

Another joyous night ahead.

No, doesn't hurt at all, can't feel anything at all -- so hopefully you can stop worrying about that aspect of it

Poor little DS!

It happened to dd a couple of weeks ago. She's a very happy and sunny girl and doesn't cry so hadn't noticed it before but had hurt herself and had a good scream. Next day noticed little red pinprick spots all round her eyes. They were clearly burst blood vessels and I was worried and gave it 24hrs to see what happened as she was otherwise fine and normal. They disappeared. A few days later she needed a wee while in the car, on the motorway, no way of stopping, she wet herself and was upset. She cried. Same thing, burst blood vessels. I then realised what had happened the first time.

When pushing in labour I burst all of the blood vessels around and in my eyes. I wonder if she's just genetically predisposed like with stretchmarks.

They don't hurt btw.

is it a petechiae rash?

sounds like it.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 19/02/2010 19:45

Don't know, I have always been told it was burst blood vessels -- is that just a term for the same thing?

blinks · 19/02/2010 21:03

here is some info about it. can be caused by trauma or a virus. rarely a blood disorder also but it sounds like the former with your DC.

TheChicOfIt · 20/02/2010 11:32

99% sure that it is caused by trauma in the case of my DS. It does look worrying though - at the moment it the worst case he has had and they are very visible.

I do worry that people will avoid us in the street!
