Are my dd's ill more than most children or is this the norm?

Or am i paranoid? (which i probably am).

Just posted a thread as dd2 is ill but got no replies (because its too early in the morning maybe).

Both dd's (age 3.11 and 6) have been ill on and off since September, dd1 has had around 3 weeks off of school and dd2 has hardly done a full week at nursery. They have had colds, virus's, high temp, tonsilitis (sp), impitigo, scarlet fever and D&V.

Dd1 is a poor eater so i understand her immune system might not be great, i supplement her with vits and she eats a lot of fruit. She was hardly ever ill last year apart from a cold and one bout of D&V.

Dd2 had scarlet fever almost 2 weeks ago as well as sickness (not sure if this was linked to the scarlet fever) and now she has woke early this morning coughing, being sick and now not keeping water down (other that this she is running around and seems fine).

I feel i have had no sleep for almost 3 weeks due to both dd's being ill and me getting the D&V bug. I have had enough of nursing sick children as well as being ill myself.

Are all children ill this often? Should i be worried? or have we just had an unlucky few months catching everything that's going?

How can i boost our immune systems?

I think you get runs of bad health and the last 6 months have been particularly bad for this sort of thing.

When mine had scarlet fever they were wiped out for ages. Also, don't forget the antibs they give for it are quite strong and often upset little tums. Perhaps this is why her tummy is bad? I would try and give her yoghurts if she'll have them?

Otherwise, if you have had a sickness bug, chances are she has picked it up. They are so contagious those bugs. I remember watching a programme where it showed how the norovirus has something built in that deliberately makes it so contagious - they are cunning these viruses!

Sorry you've had a bad run of it - we too have struggled this winter, more so than we have done for ages

Thank you for your replies.

She's watching Peppa pig now and seems happy but keeps coughing and gagging.

Not sure if i should take her to the GP as she's coughing like there's something in her throat.

She's just done it again, coughed and threw up the tiny bit of drink i gave her and lots of phlem (sorry if TMI).

Sounds like a bad run but failry normal. I felt like a nurse more than a mother for the first seven years of all my kids lives. Snot sick and temperatures. If you have more than one it goes on for weeks. It does get better as they get older.

I would ring doctor

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 08:51

the tonsillitis, impetigo and scarlet fever could be a hard to tame strep infection if thats any consolation. dd and I had a similar bout once and it took both of us being on antibiotics at once to knock it on the head.

it has been a bad winter for so many this year. everywhere I go there seem to be people coughing a really nasty cough.

I hope that it gets better quickly for you all. I don't know about the gp though.

I'm going to phone GP and see if i can speak to him on the phone, i can't really go out as i still feel rough (maybe just tired) and i am waiting for a Tesco order. It seems odd that she seems fine in herself, usually if she's ill she lies down and refuses to move, she's walking around and playing (unless being sick).

Marne dead normal, you can buy some tonic that might help the dc and perhaps some echinacea if you follow that thing.

But other than giving them a healthy diet, theres not much you can actually do- with the elder one being in school these bugs spread rapidly and what she doesnt actually come down with she introduces v kindly to her younger sibling.

It will get better soon.

Chin up.

It sounds like my oldest son. One infection after the other, usually related to his throat. He also had scarlet fever. I insisted he was referred to a tonsillectomy, and the consultant said it was very clear that his tonsils had to come out. Instead of stopping infections, they were ensuring that every cold would turn into tonsillitus, they were totally scarred and oozing. He has not needed antibiotics at all in the last three years since they came out. He has had the odd runny nose and sore throat, but it has never turned into anything nasty.

He was also bringing up water, and a poor eater. His tonsils were so enlarged that drinking caused a gagging reflex. He also get fed up eating, as it was hard to swallow.

Marne · 18/02/2010 09:12

Her tonsils don't look too bad, they always look large and bend to the side, the GP hardly ever checks her tonsils as its so hard to get her to open her mouth but she will let me look if i pretend to be a dentist . I do worry about her tonsils as her 1/2 brother had joining/touching tonsils which caused loads of problems until they were removed.

they always look large?
So did my sons. They were always enlarged, even when he was not feeling unwell. Maybe have it checked out?

Marne · 18/02/2010 09:28

I think it is a tummy bug now, she's just started at the other end .

Whenever she gets ill she gets a soar throat with it.

Spoke to the GP, he said to keep up her fluids if a can which i an struggling to do as she's throwing even the tiniest sip back up .

When do i need to worry about dehydration? I am trying to give her dyrilite (sp) as i had some in the house but she's not keeping it down.

How long does it take for a 3 year old to dehydrate?
