Chicken pox/piriton/DD going beserk

Hi DD is 3 and has chicken pox quite badly. She is doesd up on calpol, ibuprofen and as she was so agitated I got infant piriton to try and ease itching (she even has spots in fanjo and on her bum). Since having the second dose at bedtime she has been going bananas - started with a night terror, now a 2 hour strop/tantrum/confusion. Assume I'll just have to wait for that to wear off. the worst thing is that she is still really itchy. Any suggestions/remedies to try? She's been dabbed with calamine.

Poor little thing - I'd ask your doctor in the morning, my little sister (much younger than me) had this a couple of years ago and was fiercely itchy and got something that helped from the GP - sadly I can't remember what it was called.
Maybe tonight she'll just get really tired and sleep for a bit, but it sounds like you could be in for a disturbed night unless someone can post you a tip.

When DS had chickenpox (he was nearly 2 at the time) pharmacist recommended Anthisan cream. I think it's an antihistamine cream. It eased the itchiness really well.
That combined with Calpol made for a more restful nights sleep.
Is there a late night chemist near you?

Poor you and poor, poor little DD

You are one of the unlucky ones who get the opposite desired effect of Piriton.

No advice I am afraid, just sympathy.

My DS is immune to the sleep inducing affects of Piriton because he has been taking it everyday for years and years.

oh oats? that sounds worth a go too, thanks. I quite like drinking oat milk.
I wonder how it works..

my mum used to rub calamine lotion onto my skin, that eased the itching

Another vote for the oat bath here, we are on day 5 of the Pox in our house! I put the oats in a pair of old tights and tied it round the tap when running the bath, then DS painted himself with the soggy oats - nice!

Bicarbonate of soda in the bath is good too.

Would also recommend Eurax cream, found it much more effective than the aqueous calamine cream.

DS also went a bit bananas after a couple of his piriton doses - but not every time so might be worth trying it again if you can bear it!?

Good luck!

dont put anthisan on broken skin..its not recommended.

Aveeno oatmeal cream,or bath sachets.
It can affect the whole of their gastro intestinal tract which is what it sounds like with your DD having it on her fanjo. She may well have it in her mouth too.

Another oat vote. Both DDs just come through chickenpox, and the oat bath appeared to be a miracle cure to itching.

Oatey bath tonight, all quiet so far. DD enjoyed playing with the sock. About the only thing she has played with today. Hopefully we've peaked. Have collected a script for fenu something or other, another anti histamine, but not given any as not desperate enough to risk another reaction yet.
