It seems DD1 (5) has scarlet fever. She is at the out -of- hours docs right now after developing a rash a couple of hours ago.
She's had what I thought was just an ordinary sore throat for the last few days. I even made her walk into town and back, 30 mina each way, yesterday.

I thought scarlet fever only existed in victorian novels. it seems i was wrong. Any experience/,advice?

ds had it about same age. 5 days of ab's and he was fine . In fact we delayed a skiing holiday only by a day (diagnosed Thursday, went skiing on Sunday) on paed's advice ! I think the liberal amount sof Ambre Solaire helped prevent any peeling.

So she will feel better quite quickly then? Skin peeling???

I don't want to google because it always scaresthe crap out of me.

She should be fine. Sometimes the red rash on the face peels like sunburn, hands can too iirc.

Scarlet fever is another name for strep throat, ds had it a coupl of years ago, high temp for a few hours, headache, really bad sore throat, his tongue went purple for all of 10 minutes, I just thought it was a virus and took him to the GP as I couldn't identify the rash. The peeling happens if they don't get antibiotics, if it's left untreated it can cause rheumatic fever and then problems with the heart. Thank goodness (and Alexander Fleming) for Penicillin!!

Hiya Smallorange - my DS had this when he was 3. My Dr actually said that they'd received a directive from the "local" NHS that they were to prescribe Anti-biotics more frequently for tonsillitis-like symptoms. This was counter to the prevailing attitude that anti-bs had been dolled out TOO much.

The Scarlet Fever (or Scarletina) was very mild and sorted with the anti-bs - no scary skin-peeling scenarios! Seems it is has generally mutated into a milder disease in these days of general better health and sanitation (and the use of anti-bs of course). Hope she feels better soon. I certainly go to the doctors whenever my children have sore throats now - just in case.

She is much better after 24 hours of abs, as much ice cream as she can eat, tv on all the time, and lots of cuddles. In fact I think she has actually enjoyed the experience!

Am on mumsnet too much at the moment as haven't been out for three days. Arghhhh

Dd had this last summer and was really ill. She couldn't stay awake for more than half an hour for about four days and didn't even look at her toys for a week, just lay on the sofa.

Sounds as though your dd has responded to abs much more quickly, thank goodness.

My dd still had painful swollen glands, poor appetite and 'minnie mouse voice' for months after.

I hope your dd continues to improve and has a speedy recovery.
