What time should I give my dd phenergan?

I'm taking my 2.4yo dd on a day trip next week that's a little over an hour each way - and as she's started being travel sick if she's in the car for more than a couple of hours in a day (seems to be a cumulative effect), there's a really high chance she'll throw up on the way back.

I've got phenergan elixir from the pharmacist but it says to give the night before then every 6-8 hours as necessary. As I'm not expecting her to be sick until nearly teatime, that seems a bit excessive (3 doses to stop it wearing off?). Also I don't really want her drowsy for the entire day if I can help it.

Will it work if I just give it to her before we start the journey home? If so how long before? Are there any regular phenergan users who can pass on their wisdom?

is there not anything else you could give her? I teach reception and some of my class (4 year olds) have little travel sickness tabs that melt on their tongues, we just give them to them at the beginning of the return journey.

I think most sickness medication is for 3yo+. This was the only one they had in Boots for 2yo.

r=the tabltes are normaly for 4 and above but i wouldnt dose her up with phenergan during the day.

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/02/2010 21:24

I wouldnt give a 2 year old Phenergan either unless prescribed by a doctor for illness.

BooHooo · 16/02/2010 21:27

Don't give her Phenergan. Go and get some homeopathic tablets they really work.

KentuckyFriedPenguin · 16/02/2010 21:29

Phenergan can make some children hyperactive.

I don't see how travel sickness can be a cumulative thing so wouldn't medicate on that basis unless advised by GP.

Do be careful, like KFP said it can make some children hyperactive. Our dd was like a demon on speed when I gave it to her. I would investigate a different sort of travel sicknesss tablets or those bands you put round your wrist.

Sorry for late reply - too much rl stuff going on. Thanks for advice. HappyMum - GP did say she would happily prescribe phenergan for travel sickness once she was 2 - I just didn't bother going to the trouble of sorting a prescription out. KFP - I know the cumulative thing seems weird but she can be sick on quite a short journey if she's had a long journey earlier in the day - it does seem to be the case with her. Agree I don't want to medicate her on that basis though. BooHoo - I've never found homeopathic remedies to be effective - teething powders for instance never had the slightest effect on dd.

A bit stuck now - dd wouldn't keep bands on her wrist and I don't know of any other medication that's suitable for 2yos. Hyperactive side effect is a bit worrying.

Has anybody used phenergan if they've just got a teatime trip to make? When do you give it then?

Ah, no, wait! Just found Traveleeze - anybody tried these?
