Hello

When my baby was one week old she became really congested and I thought she was getting a cold. Took her to see my gp and he suggested nasal drops and said it should go in a few days.

It never really took off into a cold, her nose nevers runs but everynow and then she sneezes and thick yellowy brown snot comes out. You can hear it moving up and down, some points in the day she sounds worse and sometimes normal. But I guess because of the heating nighttime is the worst. I try to give her steams and keep the bedroom air moist which noticed helps but its not going away and its over a week now.

She does not have a temp and manages to breast feed through itbut every now and then you can see she is really fed up with it and really cries. Feel so bad for her and I know her sleeps would be deeper and feeds longer if this was gone.

Is this normal, I was going to take her back to my gp tomorrow but not sure he can do anything about it anyway.

Anyone else experienced this, how long did it last?

I also wondered if she hs an allergy to my breast milk and thats causing her to have a blocked nose? Or maybe the food I am eating, but if it was an allergy wouldnt she have really loose stools?

Thank you x

my ds seemed to have continuous cold for months when younger raise head of her cot/moses basket this will open airwaves and sit in steamed bathroom to loosen any congestion

also his radiators are on put bowl of water on them this stops air drying out and making it worse

Both of my DS's have been very congested for the first fews weeks after birth,
very snuffly, lots of sticky brown snot, and a cough,

however it has cleared up after a few weeks in both cases,
I figured that it was due to needing to expel lots of yukky stuff accumulated in the months in the womb

One thing which seemed to help both of mine was to be put on their front quite a lot as turning their head and rubbing their nose on their sheets seemed to bring out lots of the nasty sticky snot

I also used to use Olbas Oil to help clear their airways, (you don't need the child one the normal one has guidelines on use for babies.)

great - thank you!

i thought it maybe due to stuff from being in the womb because if she had a cold she would have clear snot running out whichhas never happened.

i'll try raising her moses hmattress tonight - thanks again x

My DD has very similar symptoms at 5 weeks, and turned out she had bronchilitis, and needed to be taken into hospital for a few days, I am not saying this to alarm you, but an out of hours GP missed this at first visit, and it was only when I took her back as she wasnt improving that I was sent to hpsital who then admitted her. She never had a temperature, and overall seemed "well", apart from the thick green/brown snot, and a few coughing episodes. The only way to test for this, as far as I know is for them to take a swab from their nose to test the mucous, as I said, dont want to worry you unduly, and DD was fine, but may be worth asking GP re this if you are going back tomorrow.

buy some saline nasal drops which are fine for newborn babies and put 2 drops up the nose 10 -15 mins before feeds,so that they can suckle. All it does is make the mucus less viuscous and then they can breathe and feed better. They are about £1 a bottle from the chemist
