My dd is weeks and i have noticed when she is asleep her breathing is strange. If you watch her tummy it will rise and fall say around 5 times then will be still for around 5-10 seconds then she will take a big breath and start to rise and fall again. This is not continous just now and again. Is this normal?

She does breath noisly through her nose and there are 2 lumps inside her nasal passage i have noticed that i was going to ask about t 6 week check.

Any thoughts?

it's not necessarily unusual for newborns to breathe like that- it sounds like apnea, which is quite common in babies, but it's impossible to give a definitive answer on a forum. if you've any concerns, you need to phone NHS Direct/24 to get an assessment. also get some info about SIDS, prevention etc.

watch out for longer pauses between breathes as that is less usual. 10-15 secs is mild apnea and usually has no further consequences.

was your baby premature?

meant to say, 5-10secs.

regardless, i think you should get some proper advice as you shouldn't take risks where babies and breathing are concerned.

only a week early so not classed as premature. Think will pop her to the drop in centre tomorrow for them to give her a check over, just feel am being overly cautious cos know newborns breathing can be sporadic

All of mine breathed like that for the first few weeks. I mentioned it to the mw who wsn't concerned as they were otherwise fine - I still fretted though. but they have always been ok if thats any help.
