Blue lips - just the old or something more worrying? :-S

DD is 16 months old and I have recently noticed that on occasion her lips turn blue. It is usually when she is cold or has stripped off for some reason. She is often running about and happy as anything when it happens, breathing is fine and there is no history of any heart problems. I always assumed that it was the cold but stupidly Googled it and now I'm a bit concerned. She has had her heart listened to a few times when she's been ill and nothing has ever been picked up in the past. It has only been happening during this winter and only when it's been very cold. She is quite a skinny minny so hasn't got much body fat to keep her warm and now that she's tucked up asleep, her lips are pink again. Does anyone else have any experience of this? I have called the HV and am waiting for a call back.

Sorry if this is a bit rambling!

This happens to my DD, she's now 8 yo. She has no heart problems, she's very skinny.

Cadelaide · 12/02/2010 13:27

DDs lips used to go like that when she was about 2, in the cold. Really quite alarming sometimes, but she doesn't get it much now (she's 8).

In the absence of any other symptoms I wouldn't worry

the fact its happening on a regular basis, yet her heart and lungs are ok probably means its nothing to worry about, but my dd (2.6) had a series of colds at the tail end of last year, which initially we dismissed as just sniffles picked up from nursery. it was only when she woke up one day from her afternoon nap with blue lips and hands that I phoned nhs direct. they took it VERY seriously and advised me to take her to hospital asap

and lo and behold she was diagnosed with pneumonia. she had also had no obvious breathing difficulty but when they x rayed her lungs they were full of gunk. I dread to think how ill she might have got if I hadnt taken her in

Thank you everyone!

Oooo wilkos. She has had a horrible cough on and off for a while. I think I'd better get her to the doctors. Thank you for linking those things up for me. I hadn't thought about the possibility that it was linked to her cough!

my nearly 4 year old gets blue lips, and he's quite plump. I put it down to his very pale skin

My dd gets blue lips sometimes and I was advised by my health visitor to get her heart listened to. The gp discovered that she had an irregular irregular heartbeat and after much worry and an ecg the Drs decided it was nothing to panic about.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/02/2010 13:44

My dd too gets blue lips, she is another skinny minny and spends far too long playing in the snow. FWIW, I'd get her checked out just to put your mind at rest.

squeaver · 12/02/2010 13:48

I took my dd to the GP for the very same thing. He said I was right to take her in but, because she had no other symptoms at all (e.g. breathlessness, no energy) there was nothing to worry about.

VengefulKitty · 12/02/2010 13:49

DS (5) has been getting blue lips and cold hands and feet since he was about 1yo. I took hi to GP and the blue was so obvious I was concerned.

He does have a benign heart murmur so we were referred to Paeds, but I was told by the Consultant (who treated me like I was a fussing mother) it is not connected to his going blue and that he will grow out of both as he gets older.

It is more concerning for us to see than it is for the child and his/her health apparently! It never worries DS anyway

My dd gets blue lips when she is running a temp. Maybe the cough is turning into a chest infection?

Just got back from the doctors. She is fine, well apart from being a grumpy so and so & not letting the poor doctor near her! Thank you again ladies. I just love MN!

That's good news. Always Better to check these things out I think
