stomach cramps and blood in poo - 6 year old

My poor boy has had two days of feeling fine, then overnight spending hours on the loo with crampy stomach pains and soft poos. Last night he also had some bright red mucousy blood coming out, which I assume must be a fissure.

When I phoned school to say he wouldn't be in they said it was the 10th call that morning about upset tums, so obviously there is a bug going around, but I'm concerned that it could actually be a blockage. He does get constipated at times, but nothing dreadful, although I know his dad, as a child, suffered from constipated blockages really badly. He has no temperature, and his appetite is fine, which makes me think a bug is unlikely.

We've got a doctor's appointment this afternoon, but I'm really after others' experiences. Can a stomach bug cause bleeding, when a child has diarrhea? Or is it more likely to be a blockage? Any experiences welcome.

Hi,

About 5 months ago my ds had this, but without the tummy bug. Bright red blood on tissue after wiping. I was totally freaked out and of course got him to the dr, she was so chilled about it and said probably a hard pooh and a fissure and nothing to worry about. He has never had it since. He is almost 5 btw. Im sure its nothing to be concerned about. Was it a lot of blood? Can you see the fissure? Im sure dr will put your mind at rest later xx

Thanks for responding and for the info.

I really doubt it's anything serious, and we're seeing the doc in a bit, so will see what he says.
