Should I be concerned?

DD (3) complained of an earache last week. Only once and then she didnt mention it again.

We have noticed her hearing has deteriorated. She is asking us to repeat things, turn the tv volume up and misses quite a lot.

Her glands in her neck are very swollen (about the size of a cherry/sprout) on both sides.

She hasnt been complaining of being unwell but she has been clingy the last few weeks.

I took her to the GP today who wasnt too concerned about the hearing - no visible ear infection or wax build up. But she was about the glands and could feel one in her tummy too.

GP gave me antibiotics 'just in case' there was an infection she couldnt see. She then said if the glands were still swollen 1 week after the ABs then I should go back and she would take bloods.

DD does NOT like the ABs so I'm very concerned about getting the medicine into her tbh.

But, about the symptoms. Should I be concerned yet?

Aside from the hearing thing, these were the symptoms my dd had when she had glandular fever. In that case antibiotics aren't recommended.

3 seems so young for glandular fever!!

I'm sure it is her just her immune system fighting something. The doc just seemed quite concerned about the size of dds glands and even said she wouldnt normally do bloods so soon.

I know, my dd was 2.10 when she got it. I hope your little one doesn't have it. My dd was complaining of stomach ache, had no energy and looked very pasty.

alypaly · 10/02/2010 16:29

its unlikely to be glandular fever at her age. Has she had her MMR

EVye · 10/02/2010 16:46

Hi there,

Yes she has had her MMR.

She is being really good taking her medicine.

She just told me she has a headache. I feel completely sick as I have just realised she has been repeatedly telling me she has a headache for the last few weeks and I've put ito down to tiredness/attention seeking. I didnt even mention it to the GP yesterday.

Starting to panic

Thanks Pixie. I've just spoken to DH who has calmed me down and reassured me that he doesnt think the headaches have been a big issue and our initial thoughts are probably right.

We're going to give it a few days and see if the ABs make a difference to the size of her glands, and if not we'll go back to the GP next week. I think as the GP was quite non-commital I am starting to worry about things I shouldnt.

I have been good though and havent googled anything as I know it wont help me.

thanks Pixie. Needed an ear in a panic-moment and you have helped.

She's had 4 full days of antibiotics now. Should the glands have started to go down? Or does it take longer?

Antibiotics don't work on virus'. Perhaps her affliction is viral rather than bacterial. Does she have a temperature? If not, I'd leave it till Monday and try to get an appt with your GP

EVye · 13/02/2010 17:35

Bo, no temperature. Just huge glands and generally clingy. I think as the doc mentioned bloods I am anxious.

DDs neck glands are still big enough to see without trying to find them. Saw a friend today who is a dr and she said that when the GP checks for bloods, did I know what they'd be checking for? I said I had an idea and she mentioned the Big C, and said it was good that the doc had said they would go straight to blood tests.

Feel sick.

Was meant to wait a week until after the ABs had finished (sunday) but have now booked appt for tomorrow. My friend isnt the type to make off the cuff medical comments, so I'm feeling quite anxious.

((EV)) I know I would have the same anxieties, regardless of odds and reassurance - its just natural to. And totally sensible to get checked out, too. Its true GF is by far the more common of the things they'd check for, btw.

Big hugs, (I feel as if your dd is extended family, so am taking hug liberties!) and hope the doc can give you more reassurance tomorrow, as well as bloods. xxx

EVye · 18/02/2010 19:59

Thank you Pixie. I feel like I have a sensible sounding board

Hi Eli - thanks for popping over, my parrallel life friend

My appt is tomorrow morning so I wont have too long to wait.

My head tells me it wont be anything serious but my little heart keeps tugging....

Been to GP. She thought DDs glands were smaller and so was happy. She must have realised she worried me last week so she got another GP to come in and check too

I am to keep an eye out and go back in 1 month if they are still enlarged.
