DS2 (aside form having a chest infection) seems in good health
He is toilet trained and wipes himself so it has been a while since I have been particulary close to his bits.

He has a white lump on his willy on the shaft, under the skin, not attached to the skin but to the tissue beneath it is nearly the size of a 5 p piece (but not quite)

Have noticed it about 30 minutes ago and have been googling ever since he went to bed.

Please tell me it isn't a sarcoma and that my little boy doesn't have willy cancer

book an apointment in the morning, and get it checked out, could it be an infection?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 09/02/2010 19:32

thanks cookie, I am in a spin, I am quite an anxious person and this is a bit too much for my brain to deal with!

step away from google

I know how hard it is, but stay away from it. I do this too, it is NEVER accurate or helpful though! Get an emergency appointment to put your mind at rest.

I am sure the doctor will be able to reassure you, it is most unlikely to be anything serious. Probably just an infected spot.

Northernlurker · 09/02/2010 19:35

You daft thing! STEP AWAY FROM GOOGLE!

Sarcoma is incredibly rare. 'Willy cancer' even rarer

Go to the GP tomorrow and get their view. Make sure you tell them you are worried about this so they can reassure you exactly.

nikki1978 · 09/02/2010 19:36

Very, very, very unlikely to be anything as sinister as that.

Good quote for you "When you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras"

Go to the GP, probably a cyst or blocked follicle or something.

winnybella · 09/02/2010 19:38

Hmmm...when I googled what comes up is sebaceous cysts and some other stuff that is not dangerous.
I think it's extremely unlikely for your ds to have a penile cancer.
Take him to the doctor because if it is a cyst, then maybe they have to perforate it or whatever they do.
Does it seem like there is pus inside? Or is it a flashy growth?

travellingwilbury · 09/02/2010 19:39

Did it look anything like molluscum contagium ? Small lumpy white bits ?

My 3 yr old had a few of these on his willy months ago and I was very perplexed as to how they had managed to get themselves there but they were completely harmless .

I agree with the others Step away from google

Only madness lies that way . You will never sleep tonight if you continue .

VengefulKitty · 09/02/2010 19:39

Google is awful when you are worried and looking things up! Get away from it woman!

Book an appt first thing in the morning as an emergency appt with the GP. I am sure like the others say it will turn out to be nothing more than a blocked follicle or at most a mini boil or something that can be dealt with easily.

Now breathe....

travellingwilbury · 09/02/2010 19:41

Also if he is already run down with a chest infection then I would think that he would be more likely to get other little infections too .

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 09/02/2010 19:42

I KNow I Know.......

SO Horses not zebras
Spot/boil/blocked duct not cancer....

does it warrant an appointment tomorrow or can it wait until a non emergency apppointment comes up??

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 09/02/2010 19:43

thank you ladies,
I will now go and have a glass of wine and wait until tomorrow.

OP posts:
VengefulKitty · 09/02/2010 19:44

I would base the appt on you. Can you wait and not fret until an non emergency one comes up?

VengefulKitty · 09/02/2010 19:46

Actually, my use of the term emergency appt may be a little too much. It is because my surgery use the term for any appt needed on the day you ring. I usually get these for DS so that he gets sorted and gets meds/alleviates my worries etc that day. I have never been frowned upon for it.

Northernlurker · 09/02/2010 19:52

The gp receptionist will ask if it's an emergency and I would simply say ' he's quite well but I've found a lump on him which is very worrying to me as he is so young' - then let her judge what is needed.
Most admin/reception types (nhs manager myself) will appreciate your concern and act accordingly.

MrsEricBana · 09/02/2010 20:01

Ok, my ds had something exactly like this and I was same as you and whizzed him off to GP who didn't know either and sent me to paediatric urologist who, while very kind, could hardly believe that GP didn't know what it was. It was called a Preputial pearl, which is "Preputial Pearl?- Retained secretions under a non-retractile foreskin are common. Present as white lump under foreskin or along shaft of penis. Lump is mobile non-tender, slowly growing and benign. Usually extrudes within weeks or months. No need for referral unless present for > 6 months.". Obviously I haven't seen what you're talking about but sounds like this to me - consultant said it would almost certainly go on its own and was nothing to worry about (it did). Hope this reassures you - apparently is very common.

GothDetective · 09/02/2010 20:04

I have a sebaceous cyst on the back of my neck and it looks like what you've described. Make an appt and get it checked.

lilysmummy2007 · 10/02/2010 00:31

it sounds like the thing my nephew had on his will. it was an infection from not washing properly and is usually associated with faecal deposits as well, gross, yes, I know.
We took him to hospital, the nurse pulled back hiss foreskin and it erupted in yellow/green pus and he now has a permanent sort of pit where the infection was.
Maybe at 2 years old he shouldnt be responsible for his own personal hygiene. Do you give him his baths?? If you do try and clean behind the foreskin as this is what was recommended to my sister in law. i dont think its anything more serious like will cancer but definitely get it checked out.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 10/02/2010 13:48

lils - I hope it isn't that!!

he has a bath ebery night and DH or I wash him it is just that I haven't really looked at his willy recenty, he stands up and I have soap on my hands and I wash his willy with one hand and his bum the other hand.

We haven't moved his foreskin as the current guidance seems to be leave him to do it himself over time.

OP posts:
lilysmummy2007 · 10/02/2010 15:41

I hope its not either, it was very very painful and he cried for days everytime he had a wee or a bath.
thats what they told her when sanchez was born too, so she never touched it or cleaned behind the foreskin. she does now though! tell DH as well to be more vigilant as boys produce a deposit called smegma (just found the name out on embarassing teenage bodies last night) behind the foreskin that should be removed with washing. if left it festers and builds up bacteria which is what caused it in my nephew. make sure and take him to the GP, they should sort it for you.

alypaly · 10/02/2010 16:23

hi powerofthegreyskull........my DS1 had this and it is nothing to worry about. It was quite obviously white and almost mobile, about 1-1.5 inches down his penis. It was actually making it bend very slightly which was a bit worrying.
It is smegma. see attached info........

The white lump (smegma) is made up of the cells that once attached the foreskin to the head of the penis. As new cells form on the head of the penis and the foreskin's inside fold, old cells form pockets that eventually work their way to the tip of the foreskin, where they can eventually be wiped away. So if you see a white lump (smegma) under the foreskin you know that the separation from the head of the penis is occurring naturally.

My sons GP sent us to Consultant and he confirmed this. He gave him betnovate cream to use for ! month as DS1 had a slightly tight foreskin too. It started to work its way out and when it came out...it stank of the worst stilton cheese you have ever smelled in your life.

BTW it is a very common problem. HTH

Dozymare · 10/02/2010 22:04

We also experienced this with DS2 aged 3 - was a fatty deposit...step away from google!

alypaly · 11/02/2010 00:28

my sons consultant said to gently retract the foreskin and lo and behold, the
offendinglump came out
