Infected molluscum?

PrettyCandles · 09/02/2010 16:34

I know that mollusca often look quite inflamed just before they finally heal. Ds2's molluscum is at that stage, but one of the mollusca looks a bit nasty. It's far more inflamed and swollen than I've ever seen on either of my boys, dark red on the sides, and it's got the shiny, slightly crinkly look that a mega-zit sometimes gets. It's right on his waist, so I've put a loose plaster over it to stop his trousers chaffing it, and yesterday the plaster looked like there had been a little bleeding.

Is this normal, or is this a visit to the GP?

Cured at last!! We have so much sympathy with everyone suffering as we have for the past two years. We tried many treatments, some very expensive, and eventually moved on to Molludab. The results were immediately noticeable and the molluscum cleared very quickly. We would recommend Molludab very highly. As catsilversilk said, it is a little bit stingy but twice a day for a few days makes it bearable and worthwhile!

Kidsrulethishouse · 26/10/2015 20:54

My 3yo has had them since she was 15 months old. There was only about 7 in total but they were all on her face so GP would not recommend Molludab as it would be painful and cause scarring. She got a nasty cold and the main culprit spot which was right under her nostril got very irritated by her constantly running nose and within a week or so they had all healed up. She's got scars from them though now which I hope will fade.

My lb has a sore one again on back of knee. We are flying to spain tomorrow and so I have asked for the AB that my doctor gave on Friday to be not mixed up - so I can do it when I get there. As its Fluxocillin and has to be kept cool. In the meanwhile I have some fucidic ointment from a bout of recent impetigo outburst, shall I use a little of that for now? I'm not sure if its bad enough to warrant the AB , as it is red around but still localised. feeling well stressed out.....:-(

Hi. This pic is from a month ago. The spots have spread all over tummy, back, arms and now onto hands and face. Tried thuja and molludab and no improvement. Dermatologists and doctors wont help. Any suggestions?

RandomMess · 30/07/2016 20:44

I would be insisting on a referral to dermatology to have it checked out tbh.

Ticketybooboo · 30/07/2016 20:47

We've been prescribed Dioderm and Doublebase Gel. Four days in, slightly less inflamed and spotty but have only used the Dioderm so far.

Dc12345 · 10/08/2016 21:23

Hi, ive been back and fore to dermatologists for last 8 months but they nothing can be done seemingly. Getting worse every day. Got molludab but not making any difference. On 4th bottle now.

Avebury · 10/08/2016 21:28

Silver spray worked for DS despite my scepticism

Dc12345 · 11/08/2016 08:30

Thank you, I'll try it x

Angelorb10 · 27/01/2017 04:58

I have had success with apple cider vinegar. Once the white core is near the surface of the skin, I soak a cotton ball in the ACV and secure over each individual molluscum with a band-aid. The skin surrounding the molluscum can be irritated by the ACV, so I apply an ointment around it before applying ACV, but not directly on the molluscum. I leave the cotton ball in place with the band-aid overnight. Usually by morning the white core turns black (scab). If there is no black, then I do it again for one more night. This is what I've had success with for my 6 year old.

So glad to have found this post. Thank you.

Bouncing this back up the page despite age!
My ds having horrid time with this. Docs said do nothing. Now on second week of antibiotics/ penicillin as 3 infected spots. One explosively so- hence double dose of antibiotics this second week.
He is a teenager so very conscious of these horrible spots.
Once some start to heal will others follow? Noticed couple have scabs. Others still 'developing'.
Tempted to get molludab but don't want to cause further infection.
Just hope the bloody things stop spreading and also GO AWAY!!!

DinkyDaisy · 29/07/2018 22:57

Going to try and make docs appt tomorrow.
Despite antibiotics there are other spots bulging and itchy.
Put plaster on one as looks like might burst overnight.
Horrible condition...my poor boy!

DinkyDaisy · 30/07/2018 12:34

Just talking to myself but here goes!
Nurse pratitioner had never heard of molludab but when saw ingredients of potassium hydroxide said 'might work'.
May consider for ds2 if dodgy spot develops...
Ds1 to finish oral antibiotics. Got fusidic acid cream to take on holiday- just in case needed.
Is to have piriton at night for itch and nondrowsy antihistamine for the day.
General acknowledgement that ds1 - been unlucky...

ColdCottage · 30/07/2018 21:26

I have my son covered in plasters to avoid busting and spreading as much as possible. It's so horrible. All bar one forearm, lower legs and face have loads Sad

DinkyDaisy · 30/07/2018 21:41

Hi, ColdCottage. Really is horrible isn't it?
Your poor son. So far none on face but who knows where they will turn up next. Ds1 had for over a year now. How long has your ds had them?
I so hope for an end but new ones keep appearing as old ones get juicy.
Now ds 2 has a possible spot. Great...
Infection adding whole new nasty perspective...

ColdCottage · 30/07/2018 22:22

Since October last year. I sooo wish the GP had just said to put a plaster over the first spot and we could have avoided the spread.

DinkyDaisy · 31/07/2018 07:45

Have you ever been tempted to use molludab?
Very expensive but am tempted to buy and experiment on one spot.

DinkyDaisy · 01/08/2018 18:37

Back to docs. On another antibiotic now. Took swab as well.
3rd week of antibiotics with just a days break. She got her little book out to work out what to give him as obvious antibiotic not doing job fully. Can us fucidic acid cream on various dodgy spots. Dressing on boil type area. Poor boy! He is thoroughly fed up. However, doc said this is a sign his body is reacting to the spots now...
Painful though and apparently unusual to be this unlucky with infection.

DinkyDaisy · 02/08/2018 07:16

How are things ColdCottage ?
My youngest pointed out a spot on his tummy. Tiny but bloody familiar looking!
Molludab too late for oldest. Also as on antibiotic tablets and cream feel we have to follow medical instructions with him. His skin is a sore, unsightly mess and this heat isn't helping.
I digress- should I buy molludab and whack it on any spot I see on youngest and not do the 'do nothing' approach that does not seem to have served my eldest well? Putting plaster on diddy spot at night as youngest said he woke up scratching it yesterday...
Eldest said to Nurse and doc yesterday 'I just want it to go away'. He is not a one for his appearance but is selfconscious as well as sore now and seems flattened by this. Also, not ideal to be on antibiotics more or less 3 weeks in a row. Need to try and boost him with healthy diet which at 13 he is not great on! Maybe some good flora boosting yoguarts...

ColdCottage · 02/08/2018 22:57

I'd give it a go on one spot. Totally worth £22 even though it's expensive.

Sorry your eldest is suffering so much.

Loads have turned red since the evil starter spot went red, swollen and burst last week. There are still loads of smaller ones. Do they have to get big and horrible before they too will get red and fingers crossed go!

DinkyDaisy · 03/08/2018 18:05

Have got molludab but waiting to be absolutely sure is a moluscum spot. Very small...
If one becomes two or becomes very clear- on goes the molludab.
Ds2 terrified of looking like his poor brother where we let nature take its course on doctors advice.
I asked doc if all spots have to get big and inflamed to go and she said not. My ds unlucky so most of his are unfortunately.

DinkyDaisy · 04/08/2018 06:59

Watching and waiting with ds2. See tiny white spots on face but- may just be normal for him. Time will tell! Don't want to use molludab on face. So far, molludab in packet and unused.
Poor ds1 skin still a mess. Angry spots very obvious in this hot weather plus dressings on infected areas.
Antiobiotic time- bye, bye!

ColdCottage · 05/08/2018 20:30

My sons seem to de getting red even some of the small ones so fingers crossed they are on the way out after the big one went!

DinkyDaisy · 05/08/2018 22:08

Hope on way out ColdCottage.
Noticed ds 1 now got one on his eyelid! Had noticed a mark there before but not been sure. Bit pink and raised. Not putting anything on it as so far not bothering him. Will get checked out if worried though/ gets big and juicy like the others.
If swab test taken at docs showed anything should get call tomorrow.
Oral antibiotics run out on Wed but will still have fucidic acid cream.
Some of spots are scabbing over at last but still new ones appearing. Let's hope they don't have to do the whole song and dance routine like the others have...
