Advice needed for baby

Hi I thought I would post on here to see if anyone has any advice for me.
In November my then 9 month old ds was diagnosed with anaemia, he had a hb of 7 and was prescribed sytron and refered to the paeds. A couple of days later I took him to the docs for a fever and cough, she sent us to hospital because of his anaemia, fever and also found on the blood results his neutrophil was low at 1.3. He stayed over night where they also diagnosed faliure to thrive dropping from the 9th centile to the 0.4th. He had some more bloods done and was given a follow up appointment a few weeks later. He has been in a&e a few times over the last 2 months for fever and bronciltos. At the follow up appointment his neutrophil had gone to 0.6 and his hb up to 8 so she refered us to a haematologist who I saw yesterday. Since then he has developed slightly swollen lymph nodes in his neck and back of head and has also lost some weight. At the appointment yesterday the doctor couldn't explain why he is losing weight and said I really need to be seen by a paed for hiss faliure to thrive and that his hb is coming up (10 at the moment) although its taken a while, his neutrophil is 0.7 and the sixe of his red blood cell is small at 60?????didn't quite know what he meant! I am quite concerned about leukemia and asked if they had tested for this, he said no but that if he had it he would become ill very rapidly not over 3 months. I have also seen a dieticain who looked at his diet and said she'd be v.surprised if anaemia was diet related and she does not know why he is losing weight, he eats everything I given and is by far the best eater out of my 3 children.
So I am still none the wiser as whats going on and why all this is happening, I don't know hwther to think its serious or not. I have another appointment in 8 weeks with the paed. I'm not sure whther to seek a 2nd opinion or trust what the doctors r saying. I still don't know why his neutrophils are low or why he is anaemic although the doctors suspect its iron related as he is responding to the sytron.
If anyone has any advise on what I should do I would really appreciate it. Thanks sorry its so long!

What did the haematologist say yesterday? Did he/she run any blood tests?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 09/02/2010 15:37

What are his nappies like?

titchy77 · 09/02/2010 16:36

The haematologist said he can't help where the weight is concerned and I need to be referred back to the paed, he has arranged a fbc bloods in another 8 weeks when i will see the paed again. He said he is responding to the sytron but it is taking a while to work and that he is neutrapenic (not really sure what this means although he didn't seem too concerned). His nappies are o.k he goes for a number 2 around 3-4 times a day and is weeing normally.
I feel like we are going back and forth, I saw a paed who referred us to haematology as she said she can't really help, the haematologist has now referred us back to the paed! I can't help feeling that all the things that are wrong could be linked but they are treating them seperatly.

Do you know if they did any liver function tests at the same time as the full blood count (fbc)? I would be pushing for an appointment sooner than 8 weeks-is your GP any good? Not sure what they mean by the"size" of his RBCs-makes no sense at all to me-did they mean his platelets?
The positive thingis his Hb is resolving with sytron-leukaemia is basically a failing bone marrow where RBCs and platelets are not manufactured by the bone marrow-often get massively HIGH neutrophil count where the neutrophils are multiplying out of control and pushing out all the other cells-as Hb resolving its unlikely. Sometimes an isolated low haemoglobin can be caused by a strep infection and that can cause liver enzymes to go a bit crazy-hence my question re liver tests...go back to GP and say you are worried-I am sure it will all resolve but its not worth the sleepless nights of worry for you...hope this helps

Neutropenic means a low neutrophil count-neutrophils are a type of white blood cell whose job is to fight infection-neutropenia can be caused by multiple things
