Do you always do what the GP suggests ? Antibiotics

DS is 7 weeks old. He (and I) have had pretty bad thrush which finally seems to be getting better.

I was in and out of the doctors last week because he spent 3 days screaming. On the third visit, there was gungy yellow stuff in his ear and the GP thought he'd had an ear infection which had ruptured the ear drum. He seemed much calmer once this had happened and the GP thought he would be over the worst and anti-b's would be pointless.

I went to see a different GP this morning for our post natal checks and now the other ear is gungy. He's been a bit unsettled the last couple of days but not much worse than normal. He hasn't had a temp. This GP has told me to give him anti-b's but I'm not sure there's any point and I really don't want the dreaded thrush back with avengence

Part of me thinks that she is the HCP and I should trust her implicitly, another part thinks it contradicts the other GP and wants to leave it for the weekend to see if it improves on its own.

WWYD ?

She also has some ideas about my b'fing which I'm not 100% happy with but will do a separate post on that

Sorry its long

I would give the antibiotics tbh as ear infections can be nasty - assuming the GP looked in his ears there would be a reason he prescribed them.

I know it is too late but I would have had this conversation with the GP.

My GP knows I am hesitant about anti-b's with DD and we just talk it through. A couple of times he has given me a prescription to go and fill in if she doesn't show sign of improvement.

Could you phone and ask. Thrush is horrible in a little one

Pag - you're absolutely right, I should have asked but we were talking about lots of "issues" and my sleep addled brain didn't really think about it until after AND I know its completely pathetic, but I get quite intimidated in situations like that and would feel really uncomfortable questioning her (which is ridiculous because the GP is lovely and very approachable).

DH has gone to pick up the prescription so we've got them for the weekend and will see how DS is overnight.

Tilly, if you suffer from thrush, get yourself a Zn supplement, it improves immunity and if you are bf it might help the baby too.
U can get ask for a/b in a powder form which would keep longer - then if needed u can add cold (previously boiled) water to make it up. I used to do that with my ds, a sort-of just in case scenario.
[But I also once refused a/b and discharged my ds from hospital, coz I knew in my gut that they were wrong - I was proved right in the end, so trust your gut feeling.]
If you do give a/b, you might want to look into probiotics when a/b finished.
