DD with temp 39.5, rapid breathing and shuddering - what can I do?

We went to docs yesterday, he dismissed as cold, hospital last night, they said same, am I neurotic.

DD had RSV 2 1/2 weeks ago which resulted in double pneumonia and this is why i am paranoid - don't really want to take her out if I don't have to. She has had calpol and is drinking watery juice

Is the temp coming down with calpol? have you tried any nurofen x x

Is the shuddering sort of like it is an effort to breathe?

Any tinge of blue aroud the mouth?

Is the skin sucked into the spaces around the ribs or at the throat?

The reason I ask is that is sounds like when my dd has an asthma attack.

The rapid breathing and shuddering could mean she is having difficulty breathing.

my dd was like this a month ago with RSV. I ended up with her in A&E when I couldn't get her temp down from 40 and she was breathing rapidly and shuddering. They said that was a result of the temp and said if calpol or nurofen haven't worked on their own then to give the other.
I would try this and see if that works (unless of course you think she is having trouble breathing).

I read when dd was ill that 60 breaths per minute was rapid if that helps (dd was doing this hence the trip to a&e)

With a temperature of 39.5, the rapid breathing and shuddering is likely to be rigor - the body's way of releasing heat to cool down.

Tepid flannels on forehead, ice pops, ibuprofen if temp isn't lowering with calpol.

Colds are viruses, which can still make you feel rotten even if they are 'common'.

Good idea to count the respirations Wheelybug.

You can see what is normal here

60 is indeed very fast.

Was wondering about the breathing as temp isn't massively high.

Hope she is OK Jobean.

The shuddering (if quite impressive) could be rigors; I've had them, sign of high temp. Usually accompanied by vomitting in my case. .

But is the shuddering new today or did you tell hospital/Doc about them already?

Helinher30s · 04/02/2010 14:05

I would get her checked again, maybe an infection was missed yesterday? Doctors are usually very good with checking unwell children even if its just with reassurance for you..

Thank everyone, after her nap I timed her breaths which were then 75 per minute - whizzed her to the docs and we ended up in the childrens ward within qtr of an hour. Turned out she had pneumonia again, after a week of IV anti biotics and oxygen at night her chest is once again clear and we are back at home.

My advice is trust your instincts, children can go rapidly downhill and 24 hours can be a big difference. I am glad I persisted.

What a month - roll on spring - which will hopefully kill off all these nasty infections that are hanging around at the mo.

Just read everyone's advice but we had already left before I saw it bu thanks again. Mumsnet is the best x
