stomach cramps & diarrhea

Just want to pick your collective brains pls...be warned may be tmi

dd2 is 4yrs old and for the past couple of months has had very runny loose poo's and is complaining of stomach ache.

Now she has always had loose stools since a baby, never really done a solid "normal" poo but it is especially loose right now, diarrhea consistancy. Plus the complaints of stomach ache, these don't don't stop her from playing or going to nursery but she is aware of a stomach ache.

my nephew has a milk allergy and sil has suggested that this might be a possibility with my dd. I'm taking her to gp tomorrow but would like to know if anybody else has had similar experience pls.

I would deffo look into an allergy/intolerance type issue as it has been going on for so long.

And oddly enough it could be constipation as ( TMI coming along now) the old hard poo blocks other poo from coming out then sometimes runny poo explodes from being the hard old stuff to escape. Constipation can cause awful stomach cramps and aches. Often a dull type of tummy ache.

I doubt you will get a resolution today at the GP but I think you should get this pushed for further investigation so they can find what the problem is as it must be miserable for your girl.

She does go to the toilet regularly, every day, so didn't think it would be constipation

well dds was up most of the night crying with tummy ache.
Been to the gp's this afternoon and he has given her gaviscon and asked for a stool sample to be sent off. Got to go back in a fortnight.

Not sure what he thinks the gaviscon will do for her tbh but have a cooeliac mentioned by someone, doeas anybody have any experience with coeliacs in a child?

How is she doing with the Gaviscon? Hope she is brighter and not in pain.

I don't know anything about Coeliac in children but a colleague has it. Hers was diagnosed due to her upset tummy ( she'd have a flare up and sometimes it last hours or could be days, depended on exact cause e.g what food brought it on).

She also would get funny skin rashes and her legs would swell.

The good news is after an initial shock and upset and relearning to shop and cook, she's now in contr of it and realises she'd been ill for years with it.

My dd2 was diagnosed with coeliac disease after the same symptoms as you dd, although I knew before the results came back as there is a strong line of coeliac disease in our family which made me more aware of the symptoms. Also excema/dairy intolerance is linked with coeliac too, dd2 also has this as do I.

What I would say is if you are going to get her checked out, make sure she is on a high wheat diet for at least 3 months then the blood test will show a clear result, if it is positive she will the have to have an endoscopy which will determine whether she has coeliac disease. It is hard watching your child go through this, but at least you can start to rule out possible causes and get some answers. Hope this helps.

Just thinking the blood test may well show up a positive already as she sounds like she has been having strong symptoms. You could ask your GP to rule out anything else with a blood test too, I do know though that the diet if wheat is important if she were to have a endoscopy, I had a false negative on my first test as i had already cut out all gluten.

I'm not trying to diagnose, just letting you know we were in a similar situation. Going to your GP will help.

Thank you, so nice to get some more information.
We don't have any history of it in the family but my nephew is dairy intolerant and have a history of asthma & ezcema.

Its hard getting her to take the gaviscon, she doesn't like it at all. Its just the waiting around that is hard to deal with. Have to send in a stool sample on monday and then won't be seen til 19th.

She's irritable obviously which her big sister is not taking to kindly too. So I'm trying to get to understand that dd2 is poorly and its not her fault.

I supposed she does eat a lot of wheat in cereals and bread so haven't cut anything out of her diet yet. I've tried cutting out cows milk but that has had no effect at all.

Will keep you posted...
