haemorrhoids in newborn - anyone else experienced this?

Hi, ds is 4 weeks and yesterday i took him to the GP because of a small red lump in his anus which he suspects is a haemorrhoid. He's referred us to a paediatrician at our local hospital so I'm waiting to get an appointment.

Just wondered if anyone else has had a dc with the same? Both the health visitor and the GP said they'd never come across it in such a small baby, and the small amount of googling I did yesterday would suggest it's incredibly unusual in a newborn.

Thanks in advance if you have any info or advice.

Got to get dd from school soon so will check back in later.

My GP also diagnosed my dd who was 4yrs old at the time with piles. Saw a great Paediatrican a week later who said it was a fissure which is really common.
My other dd at age 6 months had the exact same.
They both had painful time when pooing....I found it really distressing.
Could it be a fissure? They both had and still have a that lump which looks like a pile.
Hope this is helpful

Thanks both, seems fissures are much more likely and very common in young children. I'm surprised my health visitor and GP had never heard of them. I will find out more when we get to the paediatrician. I feel a bit happier knowing it's quite common!

The paeditrcian wasn't surprised at the what seemed to me an absurd diagnosis from the GP. Both my children were breastfed and were never constipated.
They said it can be caused by constipation and sometimes doing a large hard poo which causes a tear..
they are both fine..
Sure your wee will be fine too.
