Any advice how to get dd2's Temp down, feel like i have tried everything.

Hi,
I have been up with dd2 since 1am, she went to bed with a temp last night of 39.0, i gave her nurofen (sp) but she woke at 1am and vomited. I have managed to get fluids and calpal into her and put a cool'n'soothe strip on her head which made no difference at all . She's still awake with a temp of 38.7 and looks really poorly. I have opened windows, turned off heating and taken most of her clothes of but still no change in her temp.

Do i just keep going with the fluids and try not to worry about the high temp?

What else can i try?

Have you tried alternating every two hours or so with Ibroprofen and then calpol (paracetamol)?

How old is DD?

If her temp doesn't come down after some ibroprofen then I would take her to GP to get checked out.

Hope she gets better soon

BelleDameSansMerci · 03/02/2010 08:24

You can give her Calpol every 4-6 hours and keep up with the fluids. If you are really worried, though, call your GP or take her to A&E.

I had a problem with my DD (2.4) over Christmas with v high temperatures and called NHS Direct. They were great but their advice was pretty much what I've said above.

I'm sure you've already done this but you do need to check for any other symptoms. If you ring NHS they will go through the Meningitis check with you first.

She's almost 4, we have been giving Iboprofen and calpal since yesterday evening.

He sister had the same virus at the weekend but dd2 seems to struggle with controlling her temp, we often end up in A&E with her, i really don't want to end up in A&E again.

I'm sat here shivering as its so cold in here but her temp still wont budge .

She seems alert, led on the sofa and gets up every so often to look at the TV.

Yes how old is she? If she is under one you need to get advice (ring NHS Direct) - over one don't worry too much about getting the temperature down, keep giving ibuprofen and paracetamol and fluids and keep her stripped down, see a doctor after 3 days.

You can go through the checklist on NHS Direct too: here

BertieBotts · 03/02/2010 08:29

Oh I see - if she has trouble controlling her temperature then maybe worth ringing NHS Direct just for their advice.

Marne · 03/02/2010 08:46

ok, i have managed to get it down a tiny bit (38.2), last time she had a similar virus her temp got as high as 41 . I think i will give it another hour or so (in hope it continues to go down) before phoning NHS direct or the GP.

Tepid sponging can help when you've tried everything else.Or a fan if you have one.

Hooe she picks up today.

belgo · 03/02/2010 09:00

Don't make the house cold, or take off all of her clothes, if you make her cold, she will start shivering and that will bring her temperature up again.

IF you cannot get her temperature down with calpol and ibuprofen alternating, then you need to call the doctor.

Ohforfoxsake · 03/02/2010 09:07

A temperature is the bodies way of fighting infection, so in this case I'd say her body is struggling and the calpol/nurofen isn't helping so its probably worth putting a call into NHS direct at this stage.

If she still has a temperature after 24 hours, do take her to the doctors. I didn't and it turned out that DD2 had a kidney infection

I don't think at this stage you can do anything more than you are, but I'd call NHS Direct for peace of mind.

Hope she makes a swift recovery.

She's got some clothes on and a towel over her legs if she gets chilly. She's stopped drinking now, she does this as she thinks i'm putting medicine in her drink (which i did this morning as dh was not up to help me give it with the syringe), i struggle to get medicine into her, its a 2 man job as she refuses to take it from a spoon. She has Autism so its hard for me to explain to her that she needs to take it to feel better .

I agree with the fan and not getting her too cold - I wouldn't open the windows in this weather. You'll just achieve the opposite and her temperature will rise even more. I'd take her to the GP if you're worried. Hope she gets better soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/02/2010 09:12

Can you give her an ice lolly?

Marne · 03/02/2010 09:15

The temp outside is not to lo here (we are in the south).

Sadly she wont touch ice lollies (its a sensory thing, too cold), i have made her some jelly for latter if she feels up to it.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/02/2010 09:19

Fair enough, the jelly is a good idea. I don't think her temp sounds too bad, I think its more how she seems in herself really. If she looks really poorly and is acting poorly then go with your instinct, but the temp in itself is prob ok. (not a doc though)

WhoIsAsking · 03/02/2010 09:21

We all suffer in my family from having very "spiky" temperatures.

I agree with the poster earlier who advocated tepid sponging down. This can help.

WRT to the drinking - is there a drink she LOVES and doesn't have very often? Maybe you can entice her with a glass of something "treaty" IYKWIM.

It's horrible and scary for you.

belgo · 03/02/2010 09:22

it's good that her temperature has come down to 38, and if she is alert, then I would see how she goes and if she gets worse again, see the doctor.

Marne · 03/02/2010 14:20

Just an update, her temp has gone down a little, she seems more alert but still tired, i'm a little worried as her feet look slightly gray/blue but i'm not sure if that because she is curled up in a ball? She's sipping drink (very slowly) and has eaten a biscuit. Also she has a red spot (what looks like a the biggining of a rash) on her hand .

When dd1 was poorly a few days ago she had a odd rash on her face.

OP posts:
inmypants · 03/02/2010 14:24

have you done the meningitis check with a glass on the spot? - if you can still see it under the glass with pressure applied you need to get some urgent help.
Don't want to alarm you and you should trust your instinct, but it doesnt seem quite right.....

Marne · 03/02/2010 14:32

Just done the glass test and its all ok. I'm keeping an eye out for any more spots (i have checked her all over). Just spoke to my neighbour (who's going to pick dd1 up from school for me) and she told me dd1's best friend has also had the virus and came out in a rash, her mum thought it was meningitis as the symptoms were similar, she took her to A&E and they said it was a virus (thank god). Hopefully its just a virus going around but i will keep an eye on it, she's sleeping now, i will check her temp again when she wakes.

Should i be worried about her gray/blue feet?
