Ds 2 3yrs 5 mths has never seemed to see problems with his eyes but the last week or so I have noticed that sometimes his eyes seem to be crossing over as if he is trying to focus on his nose mentioned it to dp and a friend and both said they had not noticed anything so thought i was going mad dp tonight said to me did you see ds2's eyes then he seemed to cross them over and they seemed to move at seperate times

Also what is best port of call opticians first or health visitor etc

I took my ds to my optician for an eye test and he discovered he had a squint and did the referal for us.

For ease it might be worth doing the same? The HV is only going by what you tell her.

PS - don't worry - it is usually easily fixable if there is a problem

and the earlier they know about it usually the easier it is

I was referred through the hv when dd was about 18 months as her left eye turned inwards. She was referred to the orthoptist at the local hospital and ended up being long sighted and needed glasses. Some opticians dont deal with children so you may want to ring round first or see your hv.

Go to GP! Get referral to orthoptist! Same thing happened to DS- see other thread but he has been treated for past 3 years after exactly what you are describing. good luck.

My DS2 was tested for a squint at one of his developmental checks and the the HV referred him to an orthoptist(sp?). We have a family history of squints and he does get a slight turning in of one of his eyes when he is tired. He was test every 6 months for about 2 yrs and I think his eyes sorted themselves out.

With a child so young I would go to the HV and get them to refer you. Or go to the GP. I don't think, having just taken my two, now DS2 is 6 that opticians are the best place for them. They aren't keen to see children before school age it seems.

I just rang my HV when I noticed my DD3 looks like she may have a squint and she said she'd refer us to the orthoptist straight away - all I had to do was pop in and sign the referral form. Now we're just waiting for an appt.

So I'd say just call your HV and ask her what to do.
