Any dentist around? White spots on teeth.

Looking for some advice really, my DD (9) had a dental appointment today.

Up until now she has always had perfect teeth, today the dentist said she has white patches on each of her bottom back teeth, one at either side.

The dentist said these could turn into cavities if they got worse. She said it looked like it was caused but eating hard sweets and keeping them in that area of the mouth, but as DD doesn't ever really eat hard sweets, I didn't see how they had appeared.

Anyway, after leaving the dentist DD said that her friend had been bringing soft mints to school every day and DD had been taking some and keeping them in that area of her mouth

She doesn't need to go back to the dentist for 6 months, so i am presuming they aren't that bad. DD has been told that the soft mints and all hard sweets are now banned, but what I was really wondering, and should have asked, was can these white spots get better? Or are they there forever now, waiting to just turn into cavities?

Anything else we can do to prevent that from happening, apart from the usual good brushing etc that we normally do?
