2 year old with a high temp ... help

My daughter has a temperature of 39.4 and crying her eyes out. No other symptoms apart from the temperature and feeling cranky. Started last night but went down with Calpol.
NHS direct just told me to keep giving her Calpol and not to worry unless she develops other symptoms or temperature continuously stays above 40. Im not very comfortable not taking her to the hospital as 39.4 seems high, am I being overly worried? She hasn't had a temperature this high before and Im a bit scared.
Any advice would be helpful ....

OK,calpol regularly.

You can also add in a small dose of paediatric ibuprofen (calprofen) in between doses.aLSO LOWERS TEMP
What are her main symptoms,is she having any diarrhoea/vomiting/painful urination/sore throat/PAinful ears?ETC ETC

Is she easily rousable?

Is she managing plenty of fluids?

If calprofen and calpol do not work and you feel she is worsening take her to a=e OOH otherwise would reccomend using meds, plenty of fluids and rest and get her to GP in the morning.

Try cooling her down, remember the old saying

warm the cold and starve the fever?

Take off some of her layers, and perhaps a cool flannel? Lot's of cuddles will help soothe her if she feels poorly, but if you really feel uncomfortable, call the Out of hours GP - or pop down to A+E if its close by.

If any thing changes, then take her to A+E ok?

Hope she gets better really soon x x

Thank you for your replies. I kept her on calpol and in between with ibufrofen. It kept the temperature down last night and it seems to be less today but have kept her on the meds. She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms, although i did notice that her gums round her front teeth seem to be swollen. Teething perhaps? but didn't think it could take the temp to near 40? If she still has a temp tomorrow going to take her to the GP as it will be 3 days with a temp.

Thanks for your advice - really helped me last night.

Teething shouldn't make her temp go that high. I'd be tempted to take her to the GP tomorrow just to get checked over. Ear infections can cause very high temperatures and sometimes don't show any significant symptoms so it'd be worth getting te Dr to have a look. Glad the meds worked. Hope she's feeling better soon.

She has now developed white spots on her tongue and is dribbling loads. Temp seems to have reduced but she is really uncomfortable with her mouth and has stopped eating. Any suggestions? Maybe hand, foot and mouth? or oral thrush or just teething?

Docs had no appointments today so taking her tomorrow.

NHS Direct can give such utterly daft advice it's criminal

If you have a under 5 with very high temp, you should take the child to the A&E asap. In case of meningitis, high temp could well be the first symptom of the illness, by the time the rash appears there might not be much time left for the treatment to be effective.

You are NOT wasting doctors precious time, the chippopottomuses who have drank themselves into oblivion and fallen over causing structural damage to roads and bruises to themselves, are. They are carried-rolled to A&E every 5 minutes...
