Posture in an 11yo...

...anybody got any experience of back braces with children?

Ds is 11.5, very tall at 5'6" for his age and very very slim built. His posture is appalling both when standing/walking and sitting.
I've tried being nice about it, encouraging him to stand up straight, but he say's he finds it uncomfortable and it makes his back ache. I've tried being unkind about it, but it just makes him angry at me. I've even laid it on him that his Grandad suffered back ache every day of his life because of the same thing. I said I'd get a back brace for him thinking it'd encourage him to do it on his own, but it didn't work ~ in fact he's actually asked me to get him one...so back to my first sentence really.
Can anyone help please?

Have you taken him to the GP and had him checked for scoliosis?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/01/2010 00:09

Sorry, I mean her (doh!)

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/01/2010 00:09

Nope, him, double doh!. It's getting late,

solo...ask for a referral to a paediatric physiotherapist

they will talk to him about it, give him exercises and lots of advice

LOL! yes, he and no, I haven't. I don't think there's a medical problem per sé, I think it's because he's so tall and he perhaps lacks confidence. My Dad was the same ~ so tall that he felt conspicuous. Think I will have him to the Docs though

Ok AF, thank you, that sounds like a plan.

The docs is a good idea. There could be a problem with the muscles in his back, making it painful when he stands up straight or a slight scoliosis. It's best to get him checked out.

Still think he's being lazy!

Maybe, best to get it checked out though, especially if it's an ongoing problem.
