2.5yr old with recurrent croup / strider, should I be worried?

My ds, 2.5 has suffered from croup every 3 months or so since he was 12 months.

We only just got the diagnosis today, it always seems to happen at night when he's lying down, and by the time we've got to the out of hours gp it's stopped. So this time we recorded it, really awful barking cough with difficulty breathing and strange wheezing noise as he breaths in. The gp said it was croup, possibly with strider, but didn't seemed concerned. It sounds so terrible when it's happening, and like he's really struggling to breath.

Has anyone else been through this, would really appreciate any advice!

steam treatment is very helpful for this, usually.

Hi, did you get any answers for this? My 2 yo is the same recently and I'm so worried!

Croup can be triggered by allergies, reflux and viruses, sometimes complicated by asthma or underlying airway abnormalities. Often it's a mix of things that cause each episode.

Many children grow out of recurrent croup around the age of 5. If it only happens whilst lying down and resolves quickly, reflux might be a factor for your child.

If you are on Facebook, the Pediatric Recurrent Croup is a good place for support.

You'll be pleased to hear DS grew out of it and is now a healthy 16 year old (I feel old!). He did have further episodes until he was about 4, never really got to the bottom of it. Hope your little one is OK, it can feel quite scary when they're struggling to breath, ds ended up in hospital a couple of times on steroids. Taking ds outside into the fresh air, even if in the middle of the night, is what seemed to help most.
