Wheezing and panting 1 year old

DS is a bit sweaty and has been panting/breathing quickly all day and is wheezy with it. He has a bit of a temp, and is a little bit grumpy, but generally happy in himself and moving around quite a bit.

Any ideas if the panting/wheezing could be something serious? It just started early this morning.

thanks

Have you checked his neck and chest for recession? I find that to be the biggest sign tbh. And I have never gone in to a&e to be told anything but "you did the right thing" from the a&e staff (we are lucky in that our local hospital has a separate paediatric a&e and they are brilliant.....)

PepperPotts · 23/01/2010 20:00

My DS is 4 on Monday and has been having episodes like this since about 20 months.

We've had ambulance trips and overnight stays but more often than not a couple of goes on a neb and a few hours in A & E sorts him out then he gets sent home with steroids.

He is classed as asthmatic now, although only has no symptoms on a day to day basis just whenever he gets a cold or cough.

They will see you immediatley in A&E.

I am a panicarse and I know at times I've taken him up when I didn't need to and a few goes on his blue "puffer" would have probably done but I have never, ever been made to feel like I'm doing the wrong thing, and have always been told to take him if in any doubt at all.

Thank you LB. That must have been really frightening. I spoke to NHS direct and they told me the signs for the four levels of fever. His is quite mild at the moment. I will keep checking and if anything changes I'll get on to the GP or back to the NHS direct line. They were so nice, calm, reassuring and helpful. A bit like mumsnet really!

Oh god yes littlemissfixit - it was horrific I have to say. I had to hold my DS down while they put the NG tube in - was one of the worst things I've ever had to do

Sorry OP this probably isn't helping. Please do keep us updated or I shall worry

orangina · 23/01/2010 20:05

Yes, please do keep us updated (I'm checking on this thread regularly, though my connection is a bit shite tonight!)

I will do! Orangina, I did try and check for recession, but if I'm really honest I can see his neck without sort of flipping his head right back as he is at that baby stage where they have no neck. He really isn't straining for breath or anything, I would go in straight away. I did check the ribcage thing and it's not sucking right in. Just moving faster than normal.

Am checking him every 15 mins. Seems a bit more like heavy breathing now.

It's his 1st bithday party tomorrow and we have 50 people coming and are trying to prepare / make all the food tonight. They really do have immaculate timing these babies.

50 people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have enough on your plate then!

Re: recession, I find the belly thing easier to see sometimes than the neck. They really have to draw in their bellies (just under their ribcage) in order to attempt to get the air into their lungs.

Good luck!

sausage rolls are now made and baking. phew.

his temp has come down and breathing is a little more even and also quieter. I think he is in very deep sleep. Was moving his around to make sure all ok and didn't even stir.

Am beginning to feel a little calmer.

thats sound good although i would keep checking evey 20mins n probably sleep beside him just in case

AnyFucker · 23/01/2010 21:19

ok, sounds like things are settled

now you know the warning signs to look for, just keep a really close eye on him overnight

you will be tired for the party tomorrow...but you will manage on adrenalin if necessary

am sure he will be fine

hope our posts haven't freaked you out too much, but better that than complacency

MerlinsBeard · 23/01/2010 21:22

you are more worried about having 50 people round 2mo than getting his breathing checked out by a Doctor in person rather than over the phone?? Despite the fact that he hasn't been breathing right since the morning???

120 · 23/01/2010 21:25

I will keep a very close eye on him tonight. Am signing off now as have to go and concentrate on food baby!

thanks for all your advice and concern, it's nice to know I'm not fretting randomly on my own. AF I was prepared for there to be some bad stories, but that's what I needed to know.. what may happen and how to deal with it and also how serious it can be. So thank you all, it is really appreciated. Lets just hope it all stays settled.

Will update in the morning.

mom, that is a little unfair

you are not there with the OP, you cannot know how worrying her dc's condition is

she may well have slighty overstated the symptoms for all we know...people often do for the sake of a thread

if he is settled and she checks him throughout the night, that is all that is required

I actually think she has had enough of a heads-up here...no need to put on the judgey-pants

blinks · 23/01/2010 23:07

make sure you treat the fever as that alone can cause babies to breathe faster.

lots of liquids.

120 · 24/01/2010 09:34

Just a quick update.. the fever got a little worse in the night but treatable with calpol, stripping down to sleep vest and lots of BF. I slept in with him and we have just woken up, so I think he has slept it off and we are through the worst. The breathing is still raspy, but not fast and the fever has gone. Thank God for that. Not a great night by any means!

Thanks for all of you who supported me last night, it is sometimes difficult to judge the right thing to do if you haven't been in that situation before.

Thanks AF and blinks.

Thanks for the update Hope you all have a lovely day. Can you take a quick nap before the hordes arrive?

blinks · 24/01/2010 10:33

good- children often breathe faster with a fever but it's always advisable to get clinical advice as they can go downhill very fast.

keep an eye on the raspy breathing and if fever returns.

120 · 24/01/2010 10:49

sadly not LB, have to start making the sandwiches now. upside is that its not at our home, and all over by 5 . Will sleep well tonight!

thanks blinks, will keep a close eye; he won't let me put him down anyway!
