Bad tummy ache in 6yo

Can I just ask about appendicitis please,

ds1's tummy started hurting a bit last night I think, but he slept OK

It was worse this morning, we went out and a few times he was kind of having to sit down, saying he needed the toilet etc, but then it would pass...

anyway we came home about lunchtime and he was sick when we got out of the car, and said he felt bad, ie tummy still hurting but not sicky.

He went to bed at about 2.15, and woke about 4.15 still feeling rotten but more nauseous, and has just been sick again...he says his tummy hurts more now.
He is sitting playing with lego but obv quite uncomfortable.

I'm thinking probably it's just the usual type of bug as he doesn't have a temp, but just wondered how bad the pain has to be before I suspect it's his appendix?

Thanks.

Is it on his right side? If you press down (gently ish) on his right side does he freak out and climb up you with pain when you let go? I have had appendicitis and for the first day or so I thought it was monthly cramps, then all of a sidden it got horrendous and I was sick, grey, clammy and hot. Might be worth calling the Doc just in case. Hope he's ok. Tummy pains are horrid no matter what the cause

Thankyou...have tested RH corner for - is it called rebound tenderness? He said it didnt hurt there, but was v v tender when I gently pressed his tummy button.

Maybe it has not travelled there yet? Should I just wait? He keeps saying it's getting worse but is not screaming or anything just quite miserable

i think I will wait and see how he goes, if it's getting better later on I'll relax, just don't like it when they are in pain for longer than a couple of hours iyswim. Usually the vomming would help I think. Plus he still hasn't had diarrhoea or been for a poo, which is odd.

thanks again.

bump

he's writhing about in bed but not screaming or anything, just can't get rid of pain I think. He stopped playing with his lego about 3/4 of an hour ago because it hurt too much.

it's been sore about 9 hours now, is this Ok? Have rung NH direct justw waiting for them to call back.

Hi, please pursue this. If it's enough to upset you, it's enough to take action on. It needs clearing by a doctor. x

(my son had a lot of tummy pain before dx with diabetes, of all things)

Thanks, sorry to hear about the diabetes

he's just been sick again and looks very pink, but can jump up and down without any trouble, so prob not appendix (according to weirdy google test!)

thankyou for replying.

I do hate it when they are ill!

How's he doing now? Appendicitis can be "grumbling" in that the pain comes and goes a bit, so keep an eye on him. Hopefully though it's just a bug and he's right as rain tomorrow

Thankyou for asking, you're very kind...he seems to have made a startling recovery and is sitting eating cereal!

I wonder what went wrong yesterday, it wasn't typically how he is with a bug, so perhaps it was something he had to eat...he'll have to have day off tomorrow though for the 48 hour thing, which is nice! as long as ds2 doesn't start...

thanks again for your help x

Has he had regular bowel movements?

My daughter had faecal impaction last year, and had the same symptoms your ds has...sitting/crouching down helped for short periods!

We had no idea what it was & thought appendix, until an xray showed a huge impaction!

Also should add (because you mentioned him jumping etc) that she could run around/play etc & then suddenly be in pain.

Crikey, that sounds bad. How is she now?

He hasn't 'been' since Friday but usually goes pretty much every day.

He's eating OK and no pain since yesterday evening so hoping it's not that, but good to be aware of and keep an eye just in case...thankyou.

She is fine now. She had to have an 8 day course of movicol to shift it. This was late 2008 & she seems to be fine (touch wood).

I noticed with dd that the pain seemed worse in the evening, she was at school, seemingly fine in the day!

I hope he is better soon!

I realise in my first post I said last year, it was Dec 2008. Forget we are in 2010 now!
