An advice on dealing with norovirus in 1 year old?

I posted at start of week that DS had vomiting and high temp. It has since turned to diarrhoea. Drs reckon it is norovirus.

He is MISERABLE (so am I TBH). Off all food for past 5 days.

Any advice on how to handle this? Docs not overly helpful, just said give fluids and wait for it to pass. When will that be?????

I'm not sure what the minimum age is for Dioralyte but when ds was 2 and he had this we had to give him 5 mils of dioralyte every 15 mins to keep him hydrated (it replaces salts and minerals not just liquid). Check the age limits and if he can have it give him this. The poor love. Is he holding fluids down at all? Pinch the skin on the back of his hand gently and if it doesn't bounce back immediatley this can suggest dehydration. If this is the case he needs to see a dr again as he may need intravenous fluid for a little while.

DD was given dioralyte at 10 months when she had norovirus. You can make up your own rehydration fluid too. Luckily, dd was still bfed so she went back to feeding like a newborn and stayed well hydrated and lost no weight even though she did not eat for 7 days.

I think dairy can upset an already sore stomach so you could avoid that until the diarrhoea has passed.

Ice lollies are good for a reluctant drinker.

Poor ds.

Thanks, have got Dioralyte - getting him to take it is another matter. He takes a bit from syringe.

Thankfully I am still BFing which is one thing he will do - have upped feeds from usual twice to 4/5 times a day. Think this is what is keeping him out of hosp and off a drip TBH.

Need to find out how NOT to get this again too!

x-post - yes just like having a newborn again - lots of feeding, night feeds, and loads of carrying...except he is way heavier than a newborn! Will need chiropractor at the end of this.

DD had it at 10 months and has never vomitted since, no other stomach bugs. She is 2.8 now. DH also had norovirus at the same time as her and he was much worse off and very dehydrated.

Bmilk is the best thing all round. Even if it comes back up or seems to go through quite quickly he will absorb plenty from it.

DD bfed, slept and bfed and slept and had evil, evil nappies for 7 days (she vomitted for the first 2 days and then not at all). We were on holiday at the time, didn't leave the accommodation as she was very contagious and lethargic and had to have the entire bedroom stripped and replaced she was so poorly. Ruined the mattress and everything.

It's so horrid isn't it?

Oh what a way to spend your holiday - horrible.

I don't care if I never see another nappy after this week. And he screams through every nappy change as I've had to put him down to do it.

Oh yes I remember that. Clingy, clingy, clingy. I think the default position was her asleep on me with people bringing me snacks/the tv remote.

The good thing about it was that she woke up one morning and she seemed to be 100% better in that strange bouncebackability way children have.

I hope he feels better soon. I remember all too well how upsetting I found it not being able to do anything concrete for her.
