Chickenpox spots have come out but she is much worse, any advice?

DD1 has pox a few weeks ago and once the spots were out she was ok, grumpy and itchy but ok.
DD2 came out in spots yesterday and is covered, at least 50 round her bum, 40 on her face (and then I stopped counting) she has a high fever, readds 38 on an underarm thermometer that reads 36 for healthy people.
She also has had a dry nappy since at least 9ish, and even then it wasn't much overnight.
Have given ehr paracetemol and waiting to see if it comes down, but before I google is this common?
Shoudl I be worried? Cos I am!

TIA

Oh, she's 2.3, DD1 is 3.11 if it makes any difference. She's miserable, crying and clingy which is not like her either.

Thanks. I called GP about DD1 and they couldn't have been less helpful but might call them if she doesn't improve on the calpolly stuff.
Am a bit less tense as she has just done a mega wee that flooded her nappy. Well, I say less tense in a 'now I have to clean this up' kind of way.

Ring NHS direct. I find them much better.

Good luck, sounds grim. Using brufen as well as calpol? That will help with fever.

they say second children in the family infected by their siblings tend to get it worse as they have a major dose, rather than a passing dose (IYSWIM) - that what we were told when DD2 caught the pox of DD1. Calpol and feverfen in tandem helps, as does a nice thick layer of metanium on her bum to stop it stinging when weeing or pooing, she may be withholding wee if it hurts to go. Is she drinking lots?

JackBauer · 19/01/2010 15:10

Can I use brufen? I know there is something I can't use but can't rememebr what it is.

She's stil hot but has perked up a bit since having her calpol stuff (it's prescription paracetemol)
I did give DD1 medised at bedtime cos of the antihistamine, I can give that instead of 'plain' paracetemol to DD2 can't I?
The 'banning' thing is only for pillocks who were double dosing it with plain paracetemol.

FFS I know all this! What is it about a sick child that makes you question everything!

That's interesting about the 2nd child thing. DD1 would have only got it in 'passing' from school friends but they share a romo, and were sat next to each other in the car for 5 hours the day before DD1's spots came out so she is 'fully' infected!

We swear by childrens brufen. get thee to a chemist, and they can check there are no contra-indications too.

You can buy anti histamine syrup too.

JackBauer · 19/01/2010 15:52

I am having to send DH after work as I have no car.
He is getting medised as it has antihistamine and I have some brufen as well.

Apparently it is normal for the fever to continue until the spots are scabbed so that's reassured me a bit. She has perked up 'properly' as well and is running around winding up DD1 so am a lot less worried, thanks for advice though.
tea and porridge/bicarb bath before bed I think.

Piriton, aqueous calomine cream, paracetemol and profen. Bicarb in the bath or oats in an old tight leg tied around the tap as it runs is also soothing. If the spots get on her throat or eyes take her to the drs and you should be given anti virals. I sympathise ds1 gave a very bad dose to dd and ds2 over Christmas. DD ended up on anti-virals ans eye drops.

posieparker · 19/01/2010 15:58

chicken pox can be terrible and scar internal organs. My dd had it very bad, temp over 104, new spots every day for 6 days. She has about 4 scars on her face and some elsewhere and none were picked. Antihistamine, oats in the bath drained through a muslin, and calpol/nurofen to get the temp down.

posieparker · 19/01/2010 15:59

Oh and see if you can get calamine powder.

JackBauer · 19/01/2010 16:24

Buggeration, typed long post and it vanished when DD1 attacked the laptop.

have aqueous cream, porridge in sock as then you can rub it on spots, DD1 said that helped, bicarb upstairs, clean sheets and pj's.
Dh picking up medised as then I only have to get 1 batch of medicine down her at a time (she's a spitter)
Fingers crossed I get more than 3 hours kip tonight, thanks for advice, really appreciate it!
