One year old with temp and vomiting - very limp - advice please

DS has threw up his first milk feed this AM and everything we've managed to get him to eat since (not much as he hasn't been very interested in food). He has had sips of water all day OK and I did manage to give him a breastfeed at about 5PM which he kept down. Refused normal bedtime breastfeed at 7:30PM.

He feels quite hot - his temp is about 38C. Gave him some Calpol at bedtime.

He is pretty floppy/listless - just wants to sit on my lap leaning against me and then drifts on to sleep again. Slept on and off all day. Sleeping now in just a nappy.

Bit worried as not sure how best to proceed tonight - do I leave him in just a nappy (worried he'll get cold despite temp) - should I wake him to offer another feed/more Calpol or leave him if sleeping OK? Should I be doing anything more?

Don't want to over panic, but now wondering if I am not concerned enough (IYSWIM).

I think the rest sounds OK but the limpness/floppiness is a worry - don't want to scare you but it is on the list of meningitis symptoms, that's not to say it is that, but I would phone NHS 24 and go over it with them to see what they say.

notnowbernard · 17/01/2010 20:49

I would call out of hrs Dr and run it by them, get advice on how to proceed etc

Have had babies with D&V bugs, awful

IME they go limp and sleep a lot and just want to be with you

I always put them in my bed so I can keep a close eye

Just a vest and nappy, just nappy if v hot and until temp comes doen a bit

Keep offering bf, and a wet sponge or flannel to suck on

Shannaratiger · 17/01/2010 20:50

I would phone NHS direct as you will get to speak to an actual nurse. It is very reassuring! I hope everything is ok and ds gets better soon.

LowLevelWhingeing · 17/01/2010 20:50

Phone the doctor now.

MmeLindt · 17/01/2010 20:51

Phone NHS24 or your out of hours doctor.

He is probably just picked up a bug, but get him seen to be on the safe side.

hotpotmama · 17/01/2010 20:53

Yes, agree with others, phone the doctor and if you are still not happy or they fob you off then take him to A and E as they would rather see a well child than you worrying about not causing a fuss etc.

Hope he is ok.

oricella · 17/01/2010 21:05

Please call NHS24 or out of hours now - also check for all other meningitis symptoms. This site gives very clear information

are his hands and feet warm or cold?

I don't mean to scare you, but there is no mum radar that will magically tell you this is meningitis. I've been there and did not suspect for a minute my DD had it. Best thing to do is get it checked out now - don't wait till morning.. keeping my fingers crossed for you

Daffodilly · 17/01/2010 21:32

Thanks for all replies. He just woke, temp has come down slightly and he took a breastfeed. Now doing moaning crying in his cot - better sign than limp nothing he was doing earlier I think.

Called NHS direct and they are going to call me back within an hour

Am trying to strike right balance between hoping it's a bug that will better in morning and making sure it isn't something serious!

Off back to cuddle him now and await NHS nurse call back.

Daffo - I don't want to scare you, moaning crying is another symptom of meningitis. I would phone back and try and get him seen as soon as possible

MarineIguana · 17/01/2010 21:47

Yes please tell NHS 24 about the moaning crying and limpness, these things are important. Hope he's OK.

MarineIguana · 17/01/2010 21:48

If you have to go to A&E with him to get him checked, that's not overreacting - it's still the "right balance" even if he turns out to be fine, IYSWIM. It's better to be sure.

A&E or call out of hours doctor now.

Don't wait for NHS direct - they are a waste of time.

Good luck.

LittleWhiteWolf · 17/01/2010 21:54

Try NSH direct again- dont wait for a call back. Mention you have a sick baby and usually you get put to the head of the queue. If they really dont help, then I second calling out of hours drs or going to a&e. It is probably just a nasty bug...but its so much better to be safe than sorry and no HCP mind reassuring mothers that they're babies are alright.

Hope he's better soon.

Georgimama · 17/01/2010 21:56

A&E now. I know it's late, you're tired etc but it is not worth the risk.

largeginandtonic · 17/01/2010 21:57

Hospital.

Hope it's all ok.

hotpotmama · 17/01/2010 22:15

Really dont want to scare you either but one of my DS's symptoms was moaning cry when he was only 4 weeks old. Was admitted with suspected meningitis.

Was fobbed off all night by a crap out of hours doc, said it was colic then sore throat and he ended up in hospital for 2 weeks with an unknown virus, was very poorly.

Please get it checked out for peace of mind. Doctors don't know your child, you do.

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 07:21

How is he this morning?

Daffodilly · 18/01/2010 13:57

Thanks for all those who replyed last night. This is first chance I've had to get back on.

NHS Direct did call back pretty quickly. They weren't overly concerned when we went into more detail of his symptoms, esp. as the vomiting was mainly on eating and he was responding to us (as much as a poorly 1 year old does).

Ended up with him sleeping on me (therefore me not sleeping) all night. He fed a couple of times too - like having a newborn again! Temp is still high - but comes down with Calol and Ibuprofen. He has had bits to eat today - dry toast and rusks and has kept them down.

Unfortunately he has also started with diarrhoea too. Guess it is just a tummy bug. Will see how he does today - if not improving I will go into Docs this afternoon. He is finally sleeping in his cot now - and I've got to entertain my 3 year old!

Thanks again for the advice and support. DD has ox like constitution so never had to deal with these things.

Glad to read your update and that is feeling a bit better

I hope we didn't all scare you too much - it's hard to tell how ill they are and the symptoms you described set off my (and others) alarm bells. Chances of something as serious as meningitis are slim, but it does happen unfortunately. Hope he recovers quickly

Daffodilly · 18/01/2010 14:57

Don't worry didn't scare me too much - but good to consider that it might be something more serious (I think in trying to stay calm and not worry I can go too far the other way). So hard to tell how ill they are, especially with little ones and they can go downhill or improve so quickly.

I just never had this with DD. She's 3 and only had a mild temp twice!

He still most definitely not himself, but I feel better that he is eating a little and much less listless today. He is crying and complaining more - which I guess is a good sign in a way.
