odd rash with ear infection?

I have had a lot of experience with ear infections with my DD, but this is outside the experience I have. My 7yo DS1 has an ear infection, that burst his ear drum(it does occasionally happen, has with my DD as well in the past), he saw the doctor on Tuesday, and was put on amoxycillin. Fast forward to this morning, and he has this odd rash that's only around his ear, they're sort of raised, he says they don't itch but they hurt when touched. It's on the side of his face around his ear and also behind his ear. WTH is it? it almost looks like a measles type rash, but he has had his MMR and his booster, at the normal time, so it can't be that. Confuzzled now, and am also totally snowed in, GP's not open, no buses running, so need some sensible advice.

NHS 24 now. Good luck x

Tried them already, they said without seeing it, they couldn't do anything, they said to take him to the (CLOSED) doctors surgery. When I'm snowed in. Just want to know what it is, and if I should be getting more worried about it, or if it's just a rash that'll go away without any side effects...

Is there a pharmacy within walking distance that you can get to. Might be worth a call first just to check that the pharmacist is in. Or ring NHS direct back. What did they say when you told them the GP surgery was closed? Did they go through a lengthy list of questions or did they just say go to the surgery.

It could be lots of things, but I don't blame you for wanting someone to look at it for you.

You may have an out of hours service, should be the number on your GPs answering machine message.

CardyMow · 09/01/2010 21:09

No out of hours services (not answered phone all day) am on phone right now to NHS direct (finally getting my call back?!!) high possibility it's an allergic reaction to the amoxycillin for the ear infection, they're just trying to decide whether or not we should discontinue the antibiotics as my local pharmacy is not open, hasn't been all day, and no way for me to get anywhere as I'm snowed in, and it's a bad middle ear infection that needs treating as it's perforated his eardrum...aarrgghh!

Nope, definately an allergy to amoxycillin, which means an allergy to penicillin as well. I am allergic to both (and also to erythmoricin), but thought the DC's were fine, DD and DS2 have both had antibiotics (amoxycillin and erythmoricin) quite a few times, for chest infections/ear infections, but DS1 is usually as healthy as an ox, I can't think of if/when he's EVER needed them before.....GAH! Been told to discontinue ab's and if he's still in pain from his ear during daylight hours to ring the Out of hours service (which NHS direct put me through to...how did THEY get an answer when I couldn't??) Tomorrow and they will try to sort out a home visit.
