..do you know what the triggers are? ds just been diagnosed with it age 2. he has v sore, angry-looking patch on his leg and it's also bad on his bum (he's still in nappies). dr has given us oilatum, emollients etc which i've been using faithfully for ten days but it's getting worse, i think because he's scratching it.
have switched to Surcare washing powder and cut down to a bath every other night rather than daily, but would be interested if anybody has dietary/other tricks to try to get it under control. nobody in our family has eczema so dont know much about it.

From reading up on here, it seems that everyone is different. But FWIW - we use surcare and Aveeno cream and bath oil (available on prescription and fab) and what really cracked it was cutting out cows milk. I resisted for a while, but it really helps.

nope. Not for want of trying

Cows milk for us too. I switched to goat's milk and it seemed to sort it. HTH.

cow's milk and egg here.

hope's relief cream is fabulous stuff, a LOT of people on another forum recommended it to me and it really works

mamasunshine · 08/01/2010 23:34

Cut out cow's milk too, use goat's milk/yogurts etc and is much better. Dust mite is usually a big culprit, as are pets and mold. Also I give mine a dose of probiotics every few months which really seems to help.

nouveaupauvre · 08/01/2010 23:39

thanks all, if your dc were sensitive to cows milk did that show up at an early age? ds has been drinking it for 18 months odd and eczema only set in now...
intersted in the dustmites, it's got a lot worse since we moved house (all carpeted here whereas we used to have wooden floors)

Dust and fabric softner might be a trigger? They are with us.

Also I find a handful of porridge oats tied in a muslin much better then the bath emolients. Then we just use aqueos cream and a little HC 0.5% when bad patches appear.

Do you have pets? or has he been is a house with them? DD gets bad whenever we go in a house with dogs or cats.

If all else fails and he has a really bad outbreak some piriton type medicine will calm the reaction down.

thisisyesterday · 08/01/2010 23:44

yes both mine were like it from birth (reacted to it via breastmilk)

mamasunshine · 08/01/2010 23:50

A baby has an allergy 'threshold', so they can be around allergen for sometime before reactions begin. Definately sounds like the carpets are playing a big part, I would definately recommend getting rid of them, if possible? Especially in DC bedroom. Also 2nd the oats in bath...lovely, v soothing!
