Watery eye?

For the last few days, my 3 and a bit month old has had a watery and slightly gooey eye. There is no sign of irritation or redness and he doesn't seem bothered at all.

After googling (always a good idea naturally!) this sounds like the description of a blocked tear duct, apparently more common in newborns.

will be at the doc for jags next week anyway. but haven't rushed down as it doesn' t seem too bad.

Anyone got experience of this?

thanks

if you are breastfeeding then squirt some into the eye at each feed.
tis antibacterial and helps clear it up

Sounds like conjunctivitis. Is it a white goo that turns a greeny colour when it dries?

cooled boiled water to bathe and if it goes yellowy green you need to go to doc for some chloramphenicol eye drops.

Just about to add a thread myself as my 9 week old has had trouble with this since birth. last time I saw the doctor he said to roll my finger up her nose towards the tearduct when feedings but to no avail!
I had thought it was conjunctivitis but apparently not - and sure it would have passed to someone else by now if it was.
will try the breastmilk thing. If anyone else has any other ideas let me know.
My dad said he had it a while back and the optician said to hold a warm facecloth over his eye and the gently push up all along the bottom of the eye. says the stuff is like ear wax and need warming to come out properly. worked - but now sure the practicality of doing it on a wriggly newborn! May be worth a try though? (if instructions make sense that is!)
alypaly - is those eyes drops for blocked tear ducts or for conjuntivitis? May need another visit to the docs......

Both my dgs had this for the first few months[4m and 5m]they had to have drops/ointment from docs and it took ages to clear but when it did there was no residual problem.

my 9yo has a blocked tear duct at the mo lol, but the only doc at the surgery who can fix it is on paternity leave . it's been blocked for about 10 mos lol - i would just get them to check it next week when you go for vaccs.

the eye drops are for conjunctivitis. For a blocked tear duct, you need to use warm, previously boilded water on a cotton wool ball and just hold it over the eye,but make sure it is not too hot.
some doctors treat it the same as blepharitis and my very elderley mum was told to use a ver diluted solution of johnsons bay shampoo.1part shampoo :4parts water on the eye. If it is a blocked tear duct Or blocked grease gland the shampoo helps to loosen the grese and it is non stinging.see info on blepharitiswww.nhs.uk/Conditions/Blepharitis/Pages/Treatment.aspx
