optical prescription

i know there has been a few posts on children's optical prescriptions, and asking for explanations, so here is another one

My DD2 is 3 and has a prescription of +3.5 Sph in both eyes I didnt really get time to ask the optician, as although he was lovely, DD announced she needed a wee just as he finished the exam, and by the time she had finished, he had moved on to his next patient.

He did mention something about a slight turn in her right eye, which wouldnt surprise me as DD1 had the same and required patching for a few years.

On our way out, the elder optician, who saw DD1 a few months ago, glanced at DD2's prescription, smiled and said, "oh, its about half as bad as DD1's!" I knew DD1 had poor eyesight, but that was still a bit to hear!

I think dd's is +6.5 and +5 so that is a bit worse than your dd2's eyesight. The higher the number the more longsighted they are.

thanks seona, that sounds about right, as DD1's is +6 or thereabouts.

I am a little puzzled though, she is long sighted, so i thought the glasses would help her reading. But when we were reading today, with her glasses on, she was lifting the book right up to her eyes?? She didn't do that before - i am wondering if i need to check with optician, but don't really want to make a nuisance of myself if there is no problem

Hi jinglejet!
If you are longsighted then reading is harder because the eyes have to make an effort both to focus on close work, which everyone has to do,and to overcome the longsight. So a possible explanation for your DD holding the book closer is that she can focus closer to her now she has the glasses to help! But I'd check with the optician as any good optician will be happy to listen to any concerns, and have a look at your DD's record - then if it doesn't make sense to them, knowing all her details, they will follow up on it.

thanks pogleswood, she isnt actually doing it now - so will leave it till her next appointment in 3months.

And thanks for the explanation - i am shortsighted, and often wonder what she can see!
