My YO dd has got a cough which is so bad she's almost being sick, she's not getting any rest from it atall the poor love and it's keeping her awake and giving her a headache. She doesnt seem 'ill' apart from it.

I dont think she's got an infection and the cough is dry and hacking. I dont think there's much the Drs can do, certainly the cough medicine i've been giving her isnt making any diference.

How long is it likely to last and is there any point that a cough becomes an emergency ?

How

We've had a dry annoying cough for about 5 weeks now, making the rounds between us and back again. Can't seem to shake it off completely. The one cough remedy that seems to work is Tesco's own brand dry cough syrup. It even sorted DH out after he bought the strongest (but completely useless) adult remedy he could find. Give your daughter some before bed and raise her mattress a bit where her head is by putting a cushion underneath. Lying on her side will also help. If she gets wheezy when she breathes I'd definitely take her in for a checkup - might be a good idea anyway just to be on the safe side.

Agree with CocoK - My 14month DD had this for a while, off and on, but she then seemed crackly chested with it - took her down to doctor and turned out she had a chest infection so its worth getting her checked out.

dd2 has had it for weeks, been checked out repeatedly but no infection. she was being sick every night for a while (mucus dripping back onto throat etc when asleep, making her cough, gag and spew)but we have the bed up on books now, some karvol going and are keeping the room humid (bowl of boiling water under cot and wet towels on radiator) and it is really helping. my pal is a paed consult and he says this happens to some kids at winter and there's bog all to be done.

We've had it here too, and it seems to go on for ever. Sympathies.

Oh yes my 7 month old has only managed to keep one meal a day down. This cough is making him sick up a lot of his food. Poor mite. I can feel he has lost weight but when he isn't coughing he is happy as larry. It is now over a week and wondering whether I should get him checked out?

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 04/01/2010 21:28

i would always get a baby under one checked out asap, esp if you feel they've lost weight.

cece · 04/01/2010 21:31

Perhaps I will take him to be weighed tomorrow.. and see the hv while I am there...

I am so glad to see this. DD has been coughing since start Nov and I am despairing. Have taken her to docs twice but chest clear. Going again tomorrow for update as just not shifted and often seems crackly after coughing. She has coughed until sick occasionally too. Am also on karvol plug in, wet towels on radiators and bowls of water over night. Have also raised bed on books. Am praying it will go soon. Have just gone back to work and its been horrid to leave her knowing she isn't right (also not good going to work after sleepness nights! .

i sympathise, as my dd7, has this on and off for weeks too. she's be so bad at night she couldn't sleep, so i didn't get any sleep wither. bad headache, totally exhausting allround [sad[.

I had it too, tho mine broke a little and went after about 5 days. Hers 'broke' and she was able to go back to school, as she could function better, only to then get ill and it start as a hackingone again. She missed her xmas performace and other things.
It has been ok over xmas, but cmae back a few days ago.

my dd has asthma/cough history, and i started to give her, her inhalers, which were a nightmare to inhale and hold in her lungs, but i have to say I think they helped shorten the duration of this bout. She had the night cough bad when she was bewtween 2-4 yrs, and i used to give her the inhalers regularly. The past two yrs her lungs have developed/matured, as the gp said they would so i had stopped the inhalers.

can i juat say, that thing i once tried was vicks onthe soles of the feet, then socks over the top, at nighttime. a mumsnetter told me about this, and it worked on a few occasions!!
