Passing blood in nappy -

GentleOtter · 01/01/2010 14:38

Our 2 1/2 year son passed quite a bit of blood in his nappy yesterday and we managed to get him to the GP.
The GP explained that ds had had an upper respiratory infection and this would explain the nappy. Please could someone help me understand how this would affect the nappy?

Ds is well, eating normally, not complaining of any pain, passing urine normally and drinking plenty of water. His temp is normal. He is not tired but is very pale.

There was a fair bit of blood and mucus in his last nappy and I am really worried about where it is coming from. His skin is intact and he has not had a nosebleed (or eaten any food colouring/ beetroot).
GP said that the next few nappies may have blood and did not prescribe anything for the URI.

I am worried sick.

Not sure about URI, but our DD had gastritis and had blood in her nappy and the doctors were unconcerned.

As far as I knew this was because her stomach lining was inflamed, so I'm not sure with a URI.

Hope all is ok though....

Thank you for replying, TheBlasphemousShadow. Ds is completely unphased and seems fine - it is just me who freaked out at so much blood as the nappy looked like tomato soup.

He has not done a poo today but has eaten quite well (I've given him pale food and lots of water). The colour in his face is good and the horrid smelly breath has gone.

He showed no symptoms of illness apart from being quite sleepy a week ago - no cough, snuffles, nothing.

No problem GentleOtter

It's always very scary when faced with things like that. Out doctor did also say that a small amount of blood goes a long way.

Could it be things working through his system?

If you find more blood I would definitely get him checked again though, especially if you are worried.

I would err on the side of caution, but children are funny creatures and amazingly resiliant.

Is it blood from his bladder or bowel?

GentleOtter · 01/01/2010 20:12

The blood is from his bowel, Fab.
The last nappy had a lot of mucus and dull red blood.

I have no idea but was wondering if he had been straining too much?

TheBlasphemousShadow · 01/01/2010 20:39

Is the fact that it's a duller red a good sign? It's not fresh blood?

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 01/01/2010 20:45

I don't know lovie. Older blood is normally brownish.

TheBlasphemousShadow · 02/01/2010 09:08

How is DS this morning GentleOtter?

GentleOtter · 02/01/2010 11:40

He seems fine today, TheBlasphemousShadow and has had a normalish nappy although the stool is still fairly loose. I could not see any obvious signs of blood so perhaps the worse of it has passed.
He is eating and drinking well and being quite boisterous.

Thank you both for your support as I was very worried. Once things are back to normal (and we are able to get out as we are now completely snowed in), I am going to ask if he can be checked over. He is such a skinny little boy but eats really well.

Kids are such a worry. See my thread in chat.

Hope that's enough excitement for this year.

TheBlasphemousShadow · 03/01/2010 07:46

I'm glad he's in better form, once they are being boisterous again it's not too bad!

As Fab said, I hope that's it...

I looked at your thread Fab, you must have been so worried

GentleOtter · 03/01/2010 08:26

Fab, I've just read your thread and you must have felt sick - it is the worst feeling when they vanish like that. My eldest son wandered off when we were on a holiday in Tunisia - he had gone off to play with another boy that he had befriended and it took what seemed like an age to find him.
Your poor boy, all scared.

Our boy seems healthy again but I will be hovering until he does today's poo. They really are such a worry as they ail very quickly (but bounce back quickly too).

They certainly are.

I think I will feel better once tomorrow is over and I have taken him out on my own for the first time since he got lost.

TheBlasphemousShadow · 03/01/2010 22:24

Everything went ok today ladies?

GentleOtter · 04/01/2010 22:17

Things are almost fine here, thank you, apart from very loose stool. No visible blood and his appetite/ energy/ colour are good.

I have been thinking about Fab and her little boy and how they got on with their first trip out.
