mouth ulcers, temperature, when to go to the doc?

Briefly, my 14 month old has had a small ulcer (white, but not cottage cheese white) on her tongue and an ulcer behind her top incisor on the hard palette -- again, not red, but greyish white.

She has had a temperature and been saying "mummy I'm hot" which has come down with ibruprofen today. She's also been asking for water a lot, which I've been giving.

She's my first, so I have no great feel for whether it's thrush, mouth canker, hand foot and mouth (hands and feet seem ok) or just teething (can't see anything in her mouth but it looks a little more swollen than usual)

She was a nightmare to settle last night and slept on an off on my boob in bed all night. She seems willing to feed and is eating ok, but appetite diminished, but not gone.

She was crying her head off earlier and took ages to wrangle into a nap with breastfeeding on me earlier, but is now playing fairly happily and seems more or less ok in herself.

But I am concerned about the ulcers and temp When should I call a doctor? Thanks

Sounds like she may have hand, foot and mouth. The mouth blisters usually come first then in a day or two the hand ones. If you are worried take her to the docs for your own peace of mind.

Thanks, I have considered it, but her hands are fine, and it's only one ulcer on the tongue and one behind the tooth. Also, she's not been in contact with anyone apart from us and my mother recently.

But yes, if she doesn't improve and if anything appears on her hands I'll take her. Thanks

My DS2 (age 5) had this and was put on antibiotics from the doc - maybe worth a trip just to get it checked out.

Very impressed your 14month said, "Mummy I'm hot".

Mine only says "BA!"

dorisbonkers · 29/12/2009 14:29

haha, she says 'ba' as well.

Argh. I'd put this down to teething but the temperature makes me think it's definitely something. She doesn't have a cold or anything.

Just odd as she's not been in contact with anyone (I've been a bit reclusive over Christmas) apart from my mother and some neighbours.

Thanks for the advice.
