Yep. Threadworms. Do you think it is possible to clear my one year old

by hygene alone? The rest of us will take the pills but seeing as she is still in nappies, I feel confident she isn't going to be reinfecting herself or us. Right? I really don't want to give her the medication if I can help it but please let me know if you think this renders dosing the rest of the family pointless.
What do you think? Strawpoll welcome and thanks in advance for any replies. I won't be checking this again today so if I don't reappear I am not being rude!

I think she definitely needs the pills if she has it?

MellieChristmas · 25/12/2009 15:46

it must be catching because my 1 yr old dd was diagnosed and took the meds yesterday. if i am right you have to take the meds. my dd was really bothered with it until i realised what it was up for hours crying in the night in distress. took the meds yesterday afternoon and right as rain last night. i think as they are in nappies it is far less likely to spread apart from those changing the nappies but i would still take the medicine (and did ). what a nice topic on christmas day

Thanks guys. Thought medicine was safe to give from one years old but it starts at 3 months so felt ok giving it to her with bigger parameter. So we are all dosed and alllll the house has been washed and hoovered swept and wiped. At length.
Mind you I don't know why I bothered because if you look at the life cycle of the threadworm I reckon it would survive a nuclear war.

yes fother be prepared, always have some medicine in the house, IME once you've had worms the children seem prone to getting them again.

its a bloody nightmare

fothergill · 30/12/2009 11:30

just one more question - tmi but having taken the ovex tablet last night, it hasn't made any difference yet so how long does it take - I thought they were meant to be paralyzed immediately??
I may yet become obsessed with beating them, why the little....

foxinsocks · 30/12/2009 11:35

yes, we have had quite a problem with recurrent bouts of threadworms

I think the guilt lays firmly at the door of the one thumbsucker in the house (ds!).

If I was you, I would also give the second dose a couple of weeks later (can't remember what it is - 2 weeks later I think).

We have had periods where we have really struggled to get rid of them - I mean really struggled.

foxinsocks · 30/12/2009 11:38

you should feel better tonight fother

if it's bad and yours may well be as it's your first time so you didn't know the signs to look out for, it can take 48 hours to start feeling better.

if your bum has been really itchy (sorry for tmi, but I have quite sensitive skin so know what it can feel like!), you might have to moisturise it

I also find smothering your bumhole with vaseline (rub it in though) helps while you are waiting for the medicine to kick in

NotQuiteCockney · 30/12/2009 11:39

It takes about 48 hours for the symptoms to stop.

It should be possible to clear a one-year-old with hygiene alone - they have to reinfect themselves to get ill. But the tablet plus hygiene is safer.

JACKIEwrappingPAPER · 30/12/2009 11:39

oh lord ds and dd came down with them on christmas day, took the tablets boxing day, as soon as i could get to a chemist, but they are still not dead! ds was still up in the night complaining and now dd is too. gah! what do you do if the tablets don't work??

foxinsocks · 30/12/2009 11:41

the tablets have probably worked but the irritation is still left there by the threadworms - it can give them nasty skin irritation. Dd always gets vulvitis after threadworms.

are you sure it's threadworms (have you looked)? have you checked what their bums look like?

JACKIEwrappingPAPER · 30/12/2009 11:42

yes twas def the worms i checked. have been putting sudocrem on, you are prob right, just irritation. god they are a nightmare aren't they?

NotQuiteCockney · 30/12/2009 11:43

It takes the tablets 24-48 hours to work through your system. Until that happens, there can still be live works in the ... well, in the region we get symptoms in.

foxinsocks · 30/12/2009 11:45

it was when the doctor told me that in girls, the worms often crawl towards the vagina that I nearly boaked lol

yes they are evil things

we have had a dreadful problem with the bloody things

(I find vaseline better than sudocreme - also wash their bums in the morning with plain water - or get them to do it if old enough!)

fothergill · 30/12/2009 11:59

Ach I took the pill that starves them - I wanted to paralyze them! I liked the idea of that. I guess if this fails I can still achieve that.
Thanks for timeframe - it gets disturbing if you think about it too much.
It not my first time foxinsocks, but last year was breastfeeding so beat it with hygene alone (and some homeopathic pill called sine I think.)
thanks guys and good luck!
