Mixing Nurofen with Volteren, is it safe?

DD (5) seems to have a fever (digital ear thermometer only registering 37.6 but she's shivering and is very uncomfortable) and I gave her 2ml of Nurofen in her milk (if anyone's read my previous posts earlier this month, she refuses to take meds and I have to hide it in her milk and other ways. And yes I know the correct dosage is 5ml, but she'd detect it otherwise and refuse the milk. Arghhh).

So she has stopped shivering now but still seems very uncomfortable. She took a nap today by the way, which is extremely rare for her (she has had swollen lymph nodes for the past 3 weeks and has fever on and off, i have taken her to see paed 4 times or so, he says to just monitor her and treat the fever when it comes).

My question is, if her fever doesn't subside, would it be safe to give her volteren within the next say, 2-4 hours? she had the nurofen about 1-2 hrs ago. i can't remember the rules re mixing these two. Paed said to give her the volteren if her fever is 38 and above...

Help!! Any advice appreciated...

have googled, and it seems it's not advisable to mix cos they're both anti-inflammatories?? i shd just use paracetamol?

Could you not give her the rest of the neurofen?

Casserole · 23/12/2009 16:57

Don't mix them. If it's the same family as Voltarol they're both NSAIDs (non-steroid anti inflammatory drugs)

Alternate one of them with paracetamol.

needanamefast · 23/12/2009 17:06

they are the same family, NSAIDS
i would do this: when next dose due (ie you can give again in 4 hours after last dose but not more than 3 times a day in total) then give either full dose of nurofen or full dose of voltarol, not both. It doesn't matter which one you give, if you wait until 4 hours after nurofen last given. in the meantime you could give calpol.

am medical. but one finger typing while feeding is stopping me from writing a good reply so hope this makes sense.

has the doctor prescribed her voltaren as they are contraindicated i children...see patient info leafletwww.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/pages/nvcvltal/${File}/nvcvltal.pdf the only safe voltaren to use in children is suppositories.

alypaly · 24/12/2009 01:48

soory i will try the link again.info is on page !www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/.../nvcvltal.pdf

alypaly · 24/12/2009 01:49

soory i cant get the link to copy

alypaly · 24/12/2009 01:54

i think its because it is a pdf file.
Go to google search..... voltaren tablets patient info leaflet and then go to the pdf file Voltaren and see page one about tablets and suppositories.

hazlinh · 24/12/2009 02:14

hi alypaly! i'll check out the link on google...yes it's voltaren suppositories that the paed gave...

oooh thats fine, was a bit worried ,didnt realise it was the suppositories.

i wouldnt mix diclofenac and nurofen as there is no additional benefit. As the others have said they are both NSAIDs .Has he given them for temps or as a apin relief. Sorry if im being nosey as we dont give them out at the pharmacy,to children very often, unless they are in severe pain

alypaly · 24/12/2009 02:19

thought i was the only nutter awake. just cant sleep tonight!!!!!!!!!!

hazlinh · 24/12/2009 02:48

ok, i won't mix them. thanks for the advice! he gave the voltaren for temps, he said to use it if fever is 38 and above.

the nurofen was from another doc who gave it a few months ago for temp too, i think when she had an ear infection. it seems to work faster than paracetamol, so have been using it. or should i stop using nurofen just for temps, and stick to paracetamol?

aww..last-min xmas anxieties/excitement??

thats really unusual to give voltaren/voltarol/diclofenac...its mainly used for joint pains and more severe inflammation

hazlinh · 24/12/2009 15:26

oh dear. is it? hmm. haven't used it yet. i'll just stick to panadol and nurofen then

my son is in his last year doing pharmacy and he was slightly shocked at the use of voltarol in such a young one, even though it is suppositories. I have only ever dispensed it for a paralegic girl with extreme pain, and she couldnt swallow properly, but she was in her teens. there are many things that are as good without the side effects

hazlinh · 25/12/2009 16:18

crikey. ok. noted. yes my family gp frowned at it a bit too. btw, have an update to DD's situation, will be creating another thread shortly
