How long does movicol take to work in a 2 yr old?

My son has awful constipation. We thought at first it was just due to his terrible fussy eating. He was put on lactulose which didn't do much. But as his language is improving we realised he is actually holding it in cos he fears the pain of actually going. He also leaks for about 4 nappies before a poo. (These are scarily big)

Anyway we started movicol on friday pm and he hasn't pooed since. I gave the first lot with water but it took me ages cos he hated it. The second two doses I gave with milk but then I asked the chemist about it and they said not to. He hates any juices/squashes etc. So with the next 2 doses I mixed it with water so it dissolved then added some milk.

We even gave 2 doses yesterday and a glycerine suppository the dr prescribed.

Everything I read says movicol works fast! So 5 days is a bit of a worry.

DD was on Movicol and it stopped her going, she is now back on Lactulose. My sympathies and Good Luck.

oh god I thought it was going to be the wonder drug!

How much lactulose do you give?

at the moment 20mls twice a day, we have got to do this until she is back doing normal movements and then I have to reduce one of those doses by 5mls and then see how she goes and so on so it is going to be a long haul. On the other hand my nephew was on Movicol and that worked well for him.

How old is she? My son is almost 3 but 98th percentile so a big boy. He only had 5ml a day and it did nothing. But he likes it unlike the movicol which he won't drink.

She will be 4 in January. 5mls once a day is not a lot. DD hated the Movicol too, made her retch.

Just taking DS to Drs.

reup · 23/12/2009 10:40

reading it again it was 5 ml twice a day. I may up it. Also the DR gave us wrong suppositories and they are for under 1s!

It really takes over your life doesn't it?

Thanks

Takes 12hours

alypaly · 28/12/2009 19:05

he must be quite impacted if he hasnt been for 5 days after movicol. no more than 24-36 hrs to get him going. How much is he taking.

will he drink or eat fresh pineapple as this is a fantastic natural laxative.

Reup - I think I posted before about our lactulose levels - 10 ml twice a day - and she's only 15 months. I think your boy needs a whole load more.

ANd we're on Dulcolax too.

It DOES take over our life - its horrible to see them in so muh discomfort.

alypaly · 28/12/2009 19:21

wow duchess....dulcolax in a babe...thats pretty strong. Hope she is only on it short term as it can make the bowel lazy used long term.

DuchessOfAvon · 29/12/2009 14:02

She's been on it for a month and the GP wants to see us again in 6 weeks to review. Its a very small dose though - 2.5ml each evening.

But things were pretty bad for her, poor little mite.

bigdonna · 31/12/2009 10:03

my ds was 10 he was put on 10 sachets a day to start off with then slowly moved down he is still on 2 a day when he first started it gave him the runs but now it still worksgood luck

Imbacille · 31/12/2009 10:05

if you were given infant-sized suppostitories please think about using another one to soften the poo from underneath to make it easier to paass

at all these children with poo issues - it's horrid for them isn't it

My girls is nearly 3, been on movicol the past 4 months. She Hasn't had a poo in the last 7 days! was a doc's yesterday and was told to give her 2 - 3 packets a day. I'm not sure what to do surely this cannot do them any good! It's a nightmare for the kids but very stress full for parents. I'm at the stage i try any now.
Went to health shop and was advised to try orange oil for message on bellie and also a probiltic for kids. This was yesterday and she final had poo. thank goodness. Not sure if it was any thing to do with probiotics but im willing to give them a go. Can be expense tho. Just to let you know i've not given her movicol the past 2 days.
