Should I take DS to get this checked out, or is he just being 4??

Recently I have notice that my ds is asking me to repeat things constantly. I have noticed it because he has the annoying habit of saying "what?" rather than pardon or excuse me or whatever. And he says it after I have only said a couple of words.

At first, I thought he is just not paying attention, and being 4, he is often very engrossed in things. I also sort of dismissed it as selective hearing.

Anyway, the other day, he asked me if I could hear the banging noise in his head, and has mentioned this banging noise several times since. I got a very intricate description of what the noise sounded like. Apparently, it is like connecting rods with cups on the end banging together....

His speech is very good, he is very articulated, but we had an 8 week run of illness in our house which included a couple of colds and a really nasty flu for ds. I am beginning to wonder if it's a problem left over from one of these illnesses, and I also wonder if he might have wax in his ears - he never gets them wet. Would wax leave him with a banging noise inside?

So, is he just being 4? Is this non-listening thing just a phase, or should I get him checked out? Is there anything they can do if the noise is tinnitus?

One of my little cousins had 'banging ears' which turned out to be a wax buildup after a cold. He was under 2 at the time and that was the way he described it...

could be cracking sound of wax in the ears

I remember my ds going through a phase of saying what all the time-turned out just to be a phase.

best ot get it looked into

I took him to the doc this morning. He has a really nasty ear infection. She gave him antibiotics and said his hearing might be affected for 4 or 5 weeks. I had a nasty ear infection the other month, and it was indeed 5 weeks until I could hear properly.

I think that explains it.

but also coupled a bit with him just being 4 and engrossed in what he's doing.
