DD, 3 - cold, cough, spots, mouth ulcers

Hi

DD is just 3. She has had an awful cold for the last week (same as me and dd1) with high temp for 4 days, cough etc however she has lots of spots on her face (run down kind of spots) and awful ulcers on her lips. DD1 had terrible sore, dry lips but this seems worse and it is preventing her from eating.

Is there anything I can do to ease the soreness? Do I take her to the doctors or will he just say lots of fluids and rest?

Maybe hand, foot and mouth? Does she have any spots or sores on hands or feet?

DS recentley had hand foo and mouth though his spots were only in his mouth. He was understandably very niserable. The younger you are when you have it the harder it hits you. The dr's can't give anything but painkillers as it's a virus.

Sounds very much like hand foot and mouth yes, if you are concerned give the surgery or NHS Direct a ring.

It's jsut a case of keeping them comfortable with painkillers and plenty fluids and soft easy to eat foods that won't sting their ulcers, yogurt and jelly, soup etc

Thanks for responses. No spots on hands or feet. A few spots on her face which just seem like run down spots.

I didnt take her to the GP yesterday as I couldnt get an appt and I thought if they are just ulvers he wouldnt do anything.

Overnight her lips have bled. Her thumb and mouth was covered. The ulcers themselves seem to have gone down a bit. She now has a hacking cough.

It's horrible when they are ill.

Sounds like Herpangina. it is awful, DS had it when he was 6 months

You would laugh, but the only thing that helps this sort of sores is fresh goat's milk.

OMG. Just googled hand foot and mouth and a picture showed a mouth looking sore just like DDs and the symptoms fit.

I've never heard of it.

Neither DDs have had sores on their hands or feet though. Just ulcers in mouth and some spots on face.

Shiri - the chance of me getting goats milk into DD is zero. She'll only have milk it if is heavily laden with chocolate ie milkshake

Again- it does not sound like hand and foot, but truly like herpangina- it is caused by a virus called Coxsackie (google it up if you want). on the plus side- it usually lasts about a week or so and that's it.

The important thing is to keep her hydrated as possible (she might refuse eating and drinking d/t sores in mouth ), avoid spicy and salty food- just give soft foods that are bland. Also a good idea to avoid citrus and anything acetic (eg tomatoes). Apple juice is a good idea. If it's at all possible- get her to gargle salt water (one teaspoon per glass)- it will help getting the sores better.

Good luck!!!

Thanks Shiri. I actually gave her crisps yesterday as I thought the salt would help . Although it hurt a bit I think the ulcers have gone down since then.

Between us we've been stuck in the house for a week and a half with dd1 then me then now dd2 being poorly. They are fighting and we're all tired but I'm hoping she's coming to the end of it.
