2 year olds fingers and toenails falling off!!!!

A few weeks ago my 2 1/2 year old daughter had peeling skin on her toes. The doctor gave us Daktarin.
Now her finger and toenails are turning white at the base and then the nails are falling off.
They are not thick or painful, they are otherwise healthy looking.
Her diet is varied, she eats very well, so I don't think it's a deficiency of some sort.

I am taking her to the GP tomorrow, but would like to know if anybody knows what this is?

bump

sounds like a severe fungal infection. She is very young to get that. I would ask to see a consultant as no amount of creams will work for nail infections. She needs a systemic treatment but i am not familiar with one for children.

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:06

does she have any other symptoms...is her facial skin tight or her eyes sore.... just asking

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:12

My daughter also has nail problems and complains of sore eyes. Do you know what causes this, alypaly?

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:19

i believe it is an auto immune disease. Did the two start together. Does she have psoriasis at all

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:20

does she have any nails at all or has her skin gone shiney on fingers

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:32

Sorry, I don't want to hijack the thread

My daughter has a skin problem for which the GP prescribed terbinafine cream. She also has nail problems and complains of sore , itchy eyes and the skin around them. The GP said she must be allergic to shampoo and it wasn't connected, but we have tried all different types and it makes no difference.

Should I take her back to see him and what should I ask about? Now I am worried

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:36

please dont worry samantha, just trying to establish any other symptoms. does she suffer from any skin problems or sore joints

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:38

if i dont reply tonight...i will tomorrow as i am really tired tonight as i have had loads of problems with my central heating and i feel mentally jiggered.

just list any other problems that she has and i may be able to help.I used to work for a dermatology company and have been a pharmacy dispenser for a long time, With a genuine interst in medicine

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:39

Yes, rash for which she has cream

She doesn't complain of sore joints, she seems fit and active

Her eyes really trouble her, they are itchy and become red and sore when she rubs them. Her skin is tight and sore on her face, its worse now its cold. The GP gave her Diprobase cream but it doesn't help much

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:40

what sort of rash is it,does it have plaques and where abouts is it

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:41

does it itch,is the skin broken,do you have eczema ,hayfever or asthma in your family

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:42

how bad are her nails

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:42

how old is she sam

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:44

all over face, neck and upper body. The gp said it was ringworm

I worry about the eyes/skin thing. The doctor seems to think it is nothing but she says its sore. i know she has a very high pain threshold as she broke her leg and we didn't know until the next day as she said it wasn't sore

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:46

yes its very itchy

we don't know her family history as she is adopted. i have hayfever and asthma but have none of her symptoms

she is 10

nails and not bad, they have not come off at all like the OPs daughter.

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:50

if it hasnt responded to a good treatment of terbinafine ,then it probably isnt ringworm. I would ask a consultant to do a skin scraping as it can be tested for definite ringworm with Wood's Light.then at least you can eliminate it.
is the rash in plaques, small circles are just a large undefined area.
Is it eyelids that become sore or her eyeballs

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:52

i was asking about your history ,but it isnt releavant as she is adopted.

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:54

no its small patches of skin with a different texture, they feel rough and are itchy

its her eyelids and particularly the skin around her eyes, she says its tight and sore

Gp says its perfumed products, but we dont use any because other family members have eczema

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:55

will chat tomorrow sam..off to bed now. Please dont worry, i will try and help if i can, but you must still see your doctor if i advise you on anything

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:55

so I need to ask for a referral to a consultant dermatologist to do these tests?

Samantha28 · 21/12/2009 00:56

yes of course, thank you so much for your help, i really appreciate it

alypaly · 21/12/2009 01:00

n i suggest that the doctor looks at something called psoriatic arthropathy.
Often the patients get a skin problem and 30 percent get eye problems.....and this happens a long time before mild changes in joints. I would honestly ask for a referal as it must be really soe for her.

have you tried Tgel shampoo and then just let it shower on to her body. It wont harm her as you acn buy it over the counter. It has 2% tar in it which helps with what sounds like small areas of plaque developing. It helps stop the itch scratch cycle and and calms down the over production of the rough skin in those areas. have a word with Gp to see or give it a go.

alypaly · 21/12/2009 01:00

night night,speak tomorrow
